FLORICULTURE A GREAT ASSET TO SALEM
The principal theme of the
vman of this morning is Floriculture, and a splendid showing
is made of the rapid growth of
ment is to render Salem one
this country, or in the world
The real "City BeautifuU"
on account of its natural setting and the, peculiarly favorable
soil and climatic conditions here for the production of trees
ancLplants and flowers of texture and color and combination
making up the sum of transcendent beauty
in f And the showing made might be extended here almost
indefinitely. .There is scarcely a home, in all Salem, or in any
of its suburbs, that is unworthy
some outstanding feature of floriculture
x- In fact, Salem says it with flowers '
- ' . And says it with flowers
than can be found in many a
population. ; . s .
Salem is as much a Rose City as Portland, and more so,
in fact in comparison to size and population. ' Our curbs here
are lined with miles and miles of rose hedges, f And Salem is
more a city of bulb flowers than any otheron this coast, and
we grow tulip bulbs as fine as any grown in Holland; and
finer than are produced elsewhere Jn-the United States.
The Salem Floral Society has done and is doing much
good work; but it has not done and is not doing any thing ap
proaching the amount of good that it should do. It has a
small membership of devoted flower lovers of their city
.... But it should have 5000 members, each paying $1 a year
dues, and the money expended in the encouragement in many
ways of efforts to make Salem more and still more beautiful.
What this society needs is general public support.' v
Floriculture is a great asset to Salem. 1 It has "money
.value. There is good business in beauty. Make Oregon's
capital city as attractive as Nature prepared the facilities to
render it, and it will attract and hold an ever ; increasing
number of the most desirable people. J i f, !
OUR POULTRY
Paul V. Maris, director of the extension work of the
; Oregon Agricultural college, writes to W. C. .Connor, editor
' of the Northwest Poultry Journal, Salem as follows :
"Mr. Cosby spoke in a very complimentary !
way of your activities in connection with the "
v .. poultry meeting held in the Salem Chamber of
Commerce rooms at Salem on Thursday night, ' ' ,
June 4th. We have found it somewhat difficult
to- make contracts in Marion county, owing to
the lack of a personal representative there, and '
i K:-1 assure you that we appreciate your activities
in placing Mr. Cosby in touch with the poultry
men of your district." , ! 1 ;
There is to be no further difficulty of making contracts
between the poultry, department of the Oregon Agricultural
college, of which Prof. Cosby is the head, and jthe poultrymen
of. the Salem district. A big. meeting is being planned for
September, of all the leading poultrymen of Marion and Polk
4 counties, attended by; the .college authorities; and at this
meeting it is proposed to effect an organization of the poul
trymen of these two counties, for mutual benefit in many
1 ways, including the holding of a winter show annually in
. Salem. - J.
Salem has the chance to become the Petaluma of
Oregon '. r ".....;,; v ';,:J.i"":... tlf. M Vr'0lVl
And this would be one of the very biggest things that
could possibly happen to this city. It would mean a $20,000,
000 annual poultry industry for this district, and then some.
This is the best poultry country in the world, and our people
must be brought to unanimously realize this, and to work
according to the knowledge; Our poultry industry 4s boom
ing." But it is not growing.a tenth as fast as it ought to grow.
QUARANTINED
. California quarantines against Oregon cherries and pota
toes. Heretofore she ha3 furnished one of Oregon's best
markets for this product. And her free and skillful use of
this protective investment w;orks hardship !on Oregon grow
ers. It ignores the principle of reciprwitjr'andforces even
her own citizens to put up with inferior products. "
It is generally admitted that Oregon potatoes are super
ior in quality to those grown in any other section of the
.Pacific coasL''- V ',' y-:;. . .jiNC :-:v:rKd-'k:::4
"r The basis of the quarantine is the Colorado beetle which
has been found in few places in Eastern Oregon. This insect
attacks only the green vines and it appears to the observer's
that the quarantine if invoked at all should ply cnlr to
these vines and not to the portions of the Willamette Tsl!cy
whereno beetles 'have been found. (,iK$SX'

Dr. Foxham struck a bell, and
from an Inner room a white-uniformed

nurse took a pair of rubber glaves
and the physician put them on." I

iodine upon it before following
him.

; "Alright.; We aim to please," I
retorted with a forced little laugh
which died in' my throat, as' Dr,
Foxham came back into the room.
I searched : his face furtively,

laboratory. Then-he smiled down

"I'll only have to keep you a

"I'll be her maid," I said
promptly, and in a few seconds Dr.
Foxham was making a most care

my little friend, although he con
