CLOAN, Perthshire, Scotland,
June '3. Fresh and vivid mem
ories of events and custom ot al
most a century ago were given re
cently, through interview., and pen
by Mrs. Robert Haldane. mother
of Lord Haldane, as part of the
celebration of her 100th birthday.
Her memories include the first
locomotive, that chusslng creation
of Stevenson's built the year she
was born; the first balloon, and
the black and white gingham that
she and the other well-bora little
girls wore in mourning for King
George IV when he died in 1830.
Childhood in those days must
have been a more rigorous exper
ience than now. ''Mrs. Haldane
and the other children were taken
from their cribs about 7 a. m.
"and plunged overhead by two
nurses in a "bath of cold water."
"Lessons," she recaned, "were
carried on vigorously with a- gov
erness, and Is learned to reaa at
three years of age. The multipli

were repeated while - holding a
back-board, and with our . feet in
the stocks, which stocks were
specially made by the Joiner.

children were always given a mus

"The first locomotive," Mrs.
Haldane continued, "was a curious
grasshopper-looking machine that
made a tremendous noise, and if
our pon!es came anywhere near it
they at once made off in terror.
We drove with our mother in,
watch the first balloon ascend and
were greatly excited over ' the
event. I was much impressed Ly
seeing the treadmill of the New

punishment."
In 1839. when she was serious

dressed in a bright green t frock

corduroy riding breeches and
boots. His medical treatment
"was limited to bleeding."
"On looking back I realize how
wonderful the changes have been
since my birth, when It was al

to make his way In the world, and
even for one of moderate means
to occupy any position of Import
ance There were barriers every

as I was 1 was Impress? d by the
overbearing manner of the higher
classes,- so-called;- and the un
necessary display of wealth and
power. Only three professions
were considered fit for a gentle
man, the church, bar, and army
or navy. The cond tion of tha
working classes in the center and
south of England was deplorable."

' MANILA, June 6. C.ov. On.
Woods has given instructions that
natives of the non-Christiaii prov

M or os in Mindanao and by I ',ror ri

given preference in the matter of
filling positions In the public serv

In a .letter to the director of
the bureau of non-Christian tribes,
Ludovico Hidrosollo. the governor
general says there has been a.
tendency to employ I other than
natives in the government serv'ca
In non-Christian provinces. He
poirts out that the new policy
should lead to more contentment
among the non-Christians and
result in substantial benefit to
those peoples. The governor gen

"There is one policy I want you
to carry out persistently and en
ergetically and that is. the employ
ment to the greatest extent pos
sible of natives In the various of
fices and activities of the . non
Christian provinces. There " is
often a tendency to employ other
than natives. In pushing forward
the development. of these provinc
es we must do all we con to train
natives of the provinces to fill the
various posts therein."
