BEET BY-PRODUCTS
At. the annual convention
Manufacturers association in Chicago as.t month, attended
by representatives of the beet sugar interests from 'all parts
of the country, who make up its membership, Stephen H.
Love, president of the association, emphasizing the impor
tance of the sugar beet prop aside from its direct monetary
returns, declared that "the residue of the crop in the form of
crowns ana tops, pulp and molasses would produce more
human food per acre in the form of meat than an acre of
corn." ; . j "; r:' . ;
IHE.xLpve is ope of th'e big ni'ep: in he beettsugar in
dustry, land he would not make such a statement without
being abfa f dr. pjrftve it ? ! ! 2 V.;; 'Wii'
j And th'e . very valuable by-products pf sugar beets will
make that industry especially desirable for such a section as
; the Salm;Hsbkt:r :j f ; "1:v!: : 'f.: .l''iK'"''c:l
Think of our lands turning off annual products that will
yield $1000 to $3000 an acre, or even more, in such a stable
cash market as that for sugar , i .. .
J And with by-products besides with a higher value than
V corn in feeding live stock 1 Especially are the by-products
valuable-in the dairy ipdustry, which is the step-mother of
the poultry and swine industries. r
j And the by-products are, under modern processes, carried
! through the whole year. The tops may be preserved in silo,
but they are now generally being dehydrated, tinder a process
j discovered ; in Germany latelyr The factory being built at
j Bellingham, Wash., is to have a dehydrator, for, the beet
tops the men who furnish the beets, having the preference
h for the dried tops. ' ' ' . -"
j I The next most important industry for the Salem district,
U: after the linen industry, is without doubt the beet sugar
j industry, and our people ought to broadcast our advantages
in this respect, and secure a factory at the earliest possible
j "time. It can be done. . It could be accomplished as a cooper-
: ative enterprise.
There is another possible by-product of sugar factories
hat is being taken up seriously by the trade in Australia,
and that is the making of power alcohol to be used ip automo
biles in the place of gasoline. -The price of gasoline is very
high in that country, and engineers believe that power alco
hol may be made from the molasses by-product of sugar
manufacturing and sold at a lower price. The undertaking
is abready well under way, corn and other products' being
proposed to eke out the supply of the molasses by-product,
which will necessarily be limited by the quantity of sugar
manufactured in the country.
We are probably; not at the
yet; but it is likely that we
very long. ; f
The writer has contended, and believes, that we can
find the labor here in the Salem district for the thinning and
harvesting of the beets, because we are used to securing
many laborers annually for our strawberry and tree and bush
fruit and hop harvesting. How important this matter is,
is illustrated by the fact that
united btates are obliged to employ Jaborers brpught from
long distances'.; In California, Mexicans are largely used. The
beet growers of Caro, Mich., have jus,t Imported 400 Mexican
laborers for the thinning of their beets. ' :
FOR AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION
At the last session of congress a bill carrying an increase
in the amount of money furaished y the government for
agricultural experiment stations was passed. The result of
its provisions should be to continue the upbuilding of the
system of experimeht stations which have been doing excel-!
lent work even under financial handicap! !. y 5 !
This is the Purnell act and provides an additional $20,
000 for the Oregon Agricultural experiment station and a like
amount for every: other state as Ian initial appropriation!
beginning July L, this, year. This sum will be augmented by
another $10,0Q0 in 1S26 and a like amount each year until
the total of 60,000 shall be appropriated f or each succeeding
year in addition to the sum now allowed. , J I : v I . ;
"The funds appropriated pursuant to this; act shall be
applied only to paying the necessary costs of conducting
investigations or making experiments, bearing 'idh-ectly , on
the production, manufacture, preparation, use, distribution
and marketing of agricultural products and including such
scientific researches as have for their purpose, thef establish
ment and xnaintainance of a permanent. and efficient agri
cultural industry and. such economic and sociological investi
gations as have for their1 purpose the development and im
provement of the rural home and rural life, and for printing
nd disseminating the results of i such experiments and re
searches.' . J l y:' i:X-I'), ":J?l?'i-
In thus providing for more extensive effort to solve the
difficulties of agriculture, congress hs. taken a "wise step.
It has recognized in this way to a greater extent thari hcre
lofcre the necessity of developing agriculture as our most
" important national : csset;-; ;,.""!:':' :- T: .'
, The initirl u? cf these funds.will be' watched 'criiiciliy.
