That Is the Prospect for This
Year, as Things Look at
the Present Time
T. A. -iiivesley & Co.; wno own
and operate hop yards; in the Sa
lem district, including the best
equipped hop yards in the world,
employed irrigation in their Lake
Brook yard, seven miles below Sa
lem, last year. ; J i ,
They pumped the water from
Clear lake, a million and a half
gallons every 10 hours, and irri
gated their 390 - acre j hop yard
there. ; ' '! j
They estimate that they increas
ed the production ot that yard
last year by at least 25 per cent.
Their irrigation system there is
intact; it is all ready to go, or can
be made ready almost on the min
ute; but it is the opinion of Mr.
Livesley that no irrigation for
hops will be needed in the Will
amette valley this year, i
In the big yard that was irri
gated last year, cultivation is go
ing on with a view to conserving
the moisture now in the ground,
from the abundant showers that
have already fallen during the pre
sent season. ' I i f
1 . T. A. Livesley & Co., have been
growing in their own yardsabout
a million pounds of hops a year.
They; have since last year taken
on another hop ranch, of 230
acres, near Corvallis. i ; '

'i (Tobacco growing has been car
ried on more or less successfully
by a number of farmers in the
Salem district, in Beveral , cases
with enthusiasm. The Statesman
would be pleased to hear i from
any one who is interested, espe
cially any one who has any in
formation on the subject that will
be of benefit to those who may
want to grow tobacco. If we can
grow a quality of tobacco here
that may be marketed at a profit,
and a certain and reliable market
it could be a good thing to know'.

ARE STARTING UP
Producers' Plant Already
Putting Up Gooseberries; .
Strawberries Soon
The Vannery'otj the Producers
Canning and Packing company,
North Commercial and Jefferson
streets, is already ' running on
gooseberries. They . hare been
running for two 6r i three days.
They expect to commence on
strawberries Tery ' soon.
The Hunt cannery, on Front
street, will ; start on ! strawberries
on Monday, or Tuesday, and will
also- handle the gooseberries that
are under contract. ; '
The canneries of the Oregon
Packing company, the Northwest
Fruit Products company, the Starr
Fruit Products company, and the
West Salem cannery, will all be
going some time next week, or at
least around the first of June.
This makes six canneries for
Salem this year.
There is a good deal of reti
cence about what the canneries
that are not mutual are going to
do about the surplus gooseberry
crop. Their managers wllL not
commit themselves, excepting to
say that there is a large surplus
from the pack of last year, and
that it is not easy to sell.
