Something like 450 bicycle rid
ers, ranging from 86 years down
to the little youngsters of 6 and
8 yearsj were paraded through the
streets of Salem Saturday morn
ing, headed by TV A. Raffety, chief
of the; Oregon state traffic divis
ion, and John Rodda, representa
tive of the Cycle Trades of Amer
ica, flanked on either' side by po

The first division was composed
of Boy Scouts, followed by the
girls' decorated bicycles,; boys'
decorated bicycles, and then the
plain bicycles. The formation was
on Waverly street, and moved out
onto Court promptly at 10 o'clock,
going west on Court, south on
Commercial, east on State, to the
"Willamette athletic field, where
the usual demonstration took
place. - j '!::; i ; j -The
first feature of the program
Was a Very instructive talk by W.
A. Marshall of the Oregon indus
trial accident commission. The
subject of Mr. Marshall's talk was
"'Accident Prevention" and he
ably handled the subject, outlining
that it was far better!! to prevent
accidents than it is to be sorry
afterwards. .' -
Probably the I oldest ; fnan that
ever took ipart In a parade in the
United States was Nick Biers, 86
years of age, who rode the entire
-distance.; : -
I There! were some 2,000 spec
tators In the grandstand at Wil
lamette athletic field, who greatly
enjoyed the demonstration and
the awarding of prizes.

Monday afternoon the entire
student body assembled to listen
to Mr. Weisenganger, a state for
est ranger. As this Is Reforesta
tion week he has been chosen by
the state to speak to the boys and
girls in the Willamette valley on
this subject. He told us of the
work of the forest ranger and the
best ways to fight fire. The last
of his talk was illustrated by
about one hundred slides showing
the growth of. the fir tree and the
forest after the fire. At the end
of his talk he gave us a treat by
playing a couple of selections on
his harmonica. The different de
partments of the school are ob
serving . Reforestation week, es
pecially the art, civic and occupa
tion classes.
Another assembly was called at
1245 Thursday. Mr. Marshall
talked to us about the uses, care
