environment of America has had

Discussing the effects of youth
ful marriages, the report declares
that the marriage of girls lq their
early and middle . teens perpe
tuates .the undemocratic relation
of the sexes. "In such a union,"
says the report, "the husband! Is
usually older, often much older
than the girl bride, and he la in
charge of her he necQmes fthe
guardian and mentor of his wife.

of 2 4 0 child marriages, informa
tion concerning which was secured
from social agencies, license is
suers, judges, school of fiicals, law

that these sources of information

with unhappy endings than -with
happy ones, the authors iof the
report-declare: "We were,! never
theless, njt prepared for the Tery
temporary character of this group
of marriages." . : .
.. The 240 child marriages studied
took place in 31 states. In 61
cases the . bride was less than 14
years old, and in a number qf
cases 'she l was only 11 years old.
The children's parents ; consented
to 109 of these marriages. The
licenses for 131 more than half
- were illegally Issued. f-

could be described as boy and girl
marriages, the average a9"of the
bridegrooms being 27 years!and
all of the) brides being less than

groom was four or five times as
