Flunk Day Held
The Junior class of Willamette
university observed annual "flunk
day" Monday. Instead of attend
ing classes the juniors motbred to
parts unknown and enjoyed a pic
nic.
Valsetz Man Held
George Miller of Valsetz. chanc
ed with lewd cohabitation, ap
peared in Justice court yester
day and had his case continued.
He was placed In the county jail,
unable to furnish a bond of $300.
Driver Is Jailed
William Dick of Silverton was
placed in the county jail here
yesterday after having been fined
$50 and sentenced to 30 days for
driving while under the influence
of liquor, and failure to stop fol
lowing an- accident. Dick is said
to have caused one wreck, and to
have narrowly averted a second.
Stayton People Injured
i EJ W. Swallow, wife and little
son Francis, all of Stayton, were
all slightly injured In an auto
mobile accident Sunday when
their, car .went Into the ditch
near the Hager place, on the high
way east of Salem. A passing car
skidded on the pavement, throw
ing the Swallow car completely
off the grade, landing bottom side
up. The occupants crawled from
under the car, the engine of which
was still running. . The Swallow
family live in Turner but were
former 5 residents of Stayton. '

Powell Announces Reductions
A telegram received from : the
Hudson-Essex factories In Detroit
by Fred M. Powell announced two
reductions in the price jof these
cars. The Hudson coach is now
selling at $1475, a drop, of $110,
while the Essex is rated at $1060.

Better' Homes Lighting! contest,
staged here recently. ' The com
mittee at New York cityjhas sent
her a distinguished essay medal
and an honorable award certifi
cate, to show the worth of her
composition. . She attained first
place in the local contest, after
competing with nearly 1000 school
students In Salem. Twelve of the
best local essays were sent east
to enter the national contest.

Judge iPonlsen yesterday, when
fined $75 for the possession of
liquor. ' Chet -Ridgeway was ar
rested in Bush's pasture with two
companions, where they had gone
to find the .bottle of moonshine,
it is alleged. He placed $100 for
bail.
Police Court Activities-
Domingo Maldonodo was releas
ed on $20 bail yesterday after he
had been jailed for annoying
women and disorderly conduct,
Arthur Ramsyer and Victor Olem,
Turner youths, were fined $5 each
for annoying women, and fire
week-end drunks were fined $10
each. They were Charles Mooney,
S. Foster, j,eo Kill t, r-ute Bart
lett. W. E. Schultz paid a fine of
$10 for reckless driving, while
Walter Lottis, W. Thomas and E.
Feske paid $5 each for speeding,
H. Kidd forfeited a $10 bail while
Ben Miller paid fine of $5 for
the same offense. Carl Starker
and Ernest Kleeman paid $7.50
each.
Parking Signs Changed
Men , are busy remodeling .-the
parking signs in the business dis
trice in compliance with the new
city ordinance. The old signs cau
tioned against parking more than
one hour while the new signs pro
claim that automobiles may now
be parked for two hours,
Fires Cause Action
, A fire in the New Salem hotel
caused 70 gallons of chemicals to
be used in addition to the 360 feet
of hose laid by the department
Sunday afternoon. Slight, damage
was reported. . Monday afternoon
the fire department made a run to
125 North Thirteenth to put out a
roof fire. But slight damage re
sulted from the blaze. A chimney
blaze in West Salem was put out
without damage. I

Enlistments in the navy are
being taken at the Bligb. hotel by
L. B. Swails, who arrived in the
city Monday. Recruiting in the
navy was discontinued three
months ago but was opened again
Friday. Numerous calls from boys

lem boys have enlisted In the navy

brother and sister are visiting
with each other, when Mrs. Viola
La Van, of Sharpville, Penn., ar
rived in Salem as the guest of J.
W. Phenicie. 541 South Seven
teenth, her brother. Mrs. La Van
is 70 years of age and white
haired. She is also visiting a girl
hood friend, Mrs. J. G. Reigleman,
formerly a resident of Greenville,
Penn. ,
Enters Fort land Hospital

Kay, ftate treasurer, was taken to
Portland last night to enter the
Portland 'Medical hospital 'for
treatment. . She has been ill for
some time but only recently has It
been necessary that she enter the
hospital for care. j

two brothers living in Illinois.

essay contest for his division. The
