Hawley Home From
Capitol for Summer
(Continued from page 1)
Ity will be taken to make known
to all of the countries of the earth,
as well as to our own people, the
character and enduring qualities
and beneficial results of the gov
ernment inaugurated under Wash
ington. -
Greatest in -World
Mr. Hawley is also elected as
chairman of the caucus of the re
publican members of. the house for
the present 69th congress. In ad
dition to the above he is ranking
member of the great committee on
ways and means and is on the na
tional forest reservation commis
sion,: which has purchased same
2,600,000 acres of land for -the
creation of national forests in(the
White a n d Appalachian moun
tains. The committee on- ways
and means is said to be the most
powerful taxing ..committee in ths
world. - J)urin tb e ight years in
which Mr. Hawley has been . a
member of this committee there
has been received "under legisla
tion reported from it either in
taxes, collected in money, or by
the sale of securities of the United
States, which later must ; be paid
by taxation, over eighty-five bil
lion dollars. : The public debt is
now practically twenty billion dol
lars, one-half of which, or ten
billion dollars, is owing to us by
our former allies during tbe World
vrra. We are paying off our in
debtedne at the rate of five hun
dred minlibn dollars per year. Tho
expenditures for the last fiscal
year will e approximately three
billion fotir hundred million dol
lars for all purposes of govern
ment, including payment of inter
est on the debt, and the retire
ment of the debt, the last two
items amounting to practically one
billion three hundred million dol
lars. We are the only nation that,
while decreasing taxation, is pay
ing off its public debt, and that
can see in the reasonable time in
the future 'the extinguishment of
that debt. '
More legislation was passed by
the congress just closed than by
any previous congress. . Among
the items was tbe extension of the
public roads act for two years in
a total amount o' one hundred anl
fifty million dollars, out of whlci
Oregon1 will receive sufficient to
provide for the completion of -tho
Roosevelt highway and other
roads. . j .
Since Mr. Hawley. has been in
congress the engineers of the war
department have favorably report
ed on 34 projects for the Improe
ment of rivers and harbors In t'a
first congressional district. Th

out of 34 fayorably reported.
Since he has been In 'congress,
Mr. Ilawley has averaged approxi
mately one and one-half million.!
of dollars in appropriations for tlui
district for each year of service.
Calvin Coolidge is realizing tlit
hopes of his supporters arid la
proving a capable presidenX with
unusual ' ability in discerning tho
measures beneficial to the people
and in securing their adoption.
Irrespective of party, he has the
confidence and support of the
country.!

of the Atlantic coast, across the
country ; to Oregon. This is the
greenest, most attractive and pros- :

meeting our friends."
Mr. and Mrs. Ilawley are look
