use, during which none of the dire'

'accepted as a matter of course by

comfort in driving that there now
is no longer any of the discussion
which marked their widespread
use in this country with the advent
of the, Packard Eight in June,

considerable time and from their
use had come many valuable les
sons for the American engineer.
However.for years engineers here
uad been at work on four-wheel
brakes before the war and in 1919
Ve had developed our system of
brakes J almost to their present
pornt.

Wheel brakes have been in use in
this country it has been proven
rather conclusively that there are
only a few fundamental engineer
ing principles which must be ob
served, to meet with best results.
Chief, of these are that there must
bf - maintained -a '- fixed ratio of
braking pressure scientifically pre
determined as between the front
a?d rear brakes and that there
must also be an equalization of
pressure between the brakes on op
posite wheels. ,
' Our own experience has proven
also that best results are obtained
by the use. of internal expanding
brakes on the front Wheels and ex-i
ternal contract bands on the rear
wheels, : ;-v . . .

One thousand cars a1 day the
biggest six-cylinder business in th
automobile Industry are now be
ing built in the Hudson-Essex fac
tories in Detroit,- according to word
received by Prted M. Powell, Hudson-Essex
dealer. ; -
Ninety per cent of this immense
business is in the popular Hudson
Essex coaches, i it was j declared.
The coach type of body ;was orig
inated by the Hudson organization
three years ago, and this concern
now has had the experience of
building nearly a quarter of a mil
lion of them. 1
"This great volume o business
vhich has brought Hudsbn-Esex
into- an indisputable six-cylinder
leadership for the whole Industry,"
said Mr. Powell, "has been a stea
dy growth over a! period! in which
the coach has been built. There
probably has never been a single
body type in the whole history of
the. business which has had such a
phenomenal success. !

come such that Hudson-Essex is
