imately $500,000 in taxes at a probable cost of less than
$10,000 for worlc on the petitions. Surely the proponents of
the referendum can not hope to postpone the payment of a
larger portion 'of the cost, for the maintenance of the high
ways much longer, andthe' public will, it is believed, 'resent
the action of the companies
