But Never Saw It
What , has been declared to be
"the first pearl of German-American,
poetry was a song' boosting
OregonL. and la. now.; made public
in this state for the first time.
It wa, written by "one ,of Ore
gon's earliest boosters who never
saw, the state but whose rousing
publicity ; efforts ; induced ? many
Americans of . that time to make
good their' claim to the Oregon
territory by actual settlement of
the land. Interesting historical
Tacts' to" this effect have "been, as
sembled" by; the Northern Pacifie
railway which this months is" en
gaged in an Oregon ' advertising
and ' publicity 'campaign, through
out the East. ; ' '"
It is ' believed that not . until
now- has this pioner promoter
ever received . any credit ,or . re
cognition in the state; which he
helped to' benefit. His name was
Alexander Come. and. the Oregon
promotion work he did was accom
plished almost 80 years ago. Just
before he was killed in atjtidn .In
the Mexican war during the battle
of Buena Vista, February 23,
18471; Conze.was born ieariSt.
Louis, Mo., and just .before enlist
ing, in the war was conducting a
private school in Milwaukee, Wis.
From there he jwent t.o Alton, 111.,
and joined a company- ot volun
teer which was then forming and
he was' 28 years old when he fell
in battle. ,
Conz wrote a song" In German
about . Oregon,,, which ,.waa printed
in a history of Milwaukee, Wis.,
and by a strange coincidence - a
translation of. this, song,' now
comes td Oregon, long after its
author has been : forgotten.
