Too Many Newspapers Are
of Tearing Down Rather
ThantlpbuildingType
Editor Statesman:
May 1 offer a word of appre
ciation for the article published
on Slogan page of The Statesman
of February 5th, entitled. "The
Kind of Xews That Would Open
o the People a Whole New Fron
tier." .
At Dr. Morris says, "We can not.
get along without the press, yet
we some times wonder if the
majority of daily papers are not
too full of reading matter of the
tearing down rather than the up
building type.
;" We like The Statesman. ! There
are not so many glaring head lines
of scandal. There is more of the
kind of reading that will help us
to live better.
FLORENCE E. GALE NEAL
Turner, Oregon,
February 7, 1925..
(As the reader will remember,
this refers to ihe article of Dr.
Robert T. Morris of New York,
showing that if the newspapers
of the United - States would give
a tithe of the space they devote
Jo crime and scandal and other
less important news, to the dis
semination of development news,
the country would be better off
and especclally a whole new fron
tier of the subsoil might be open
ed up with the growth of the nut
industries. Ed.)
SOME TIMELY
Extra Eggs in Fall More Than
Pay Extra Cost of Good
r Chick in Spring
C (Following are paragraphs from
a current bulletin of the depart
ment of industrial Journalism of
the Oreeon Agricultural, college: )
Applications of land plaster in
March increases the growth ot
Oregon vetch, says the experiment
station. At the rate of 75 pound!
an acre it will help out the weak
stands of -all and spring planted
vetch which were damaged by the
cold weather last winter, f When
fertilizers are applied to the
normal stand- there will be an n
.rease in growth but not so noti
ceable as when put on the weak
or thinner stands. . i ' '
A chick costing a little moro
man-the average may lay a dozen
or two more eggs as a pullet, ac
cording to Progessor A. G. Lur.ii,
of the Oregon station. One or
two. eggs In the fall will more
tnan pay this additional cost of
the chicks.
Bee Keepers are urged lo see
that the entrance to the hives are
open so that bees may come out
on sunny days, says the Oregon
experiment station. 'By lifting fie
back end of the hive - the bee
keeper is enabled to determine by
th weight the amount of stores,
the bees have." The sprfng nifji
may be lessened by getting equip
ment, ready for use now.
: Application of commercial fpr
'ilizers to be most efficient on thin
rain stands should be made' in
the early part of March, says the
experiment station. A light ap
plication of nitrate of soda or
sulfate of ammonia 50 to 75
pounds an acre- stimulates stock
ing of thin stands of small grains
n western Oregon. ' -
