ROMANCE OF MARINE
BEGINS IN RUSSIA
(Continued from page 1) .
is - another problem, however,
which arises after the woman
gains entry at the Golden Gate,
railroad fare from the-e to Salem
must be provided.
The romance started in 192:
when the .marine met the sloe
eyed miss in Russia, while he was
on 'detached duty with the United
States forces. Just a month had
he known her, when the knot was
tied by the Russian church offic
ials, and before he could learn to
speak or write her language and
she to comprehend his, the marine
was 'transferred to Manila. The
bride of a month was left on the
shores of Russia.
Through, the efforts of the Red
Cross ' officials, however, the
means of providing transportation
were arranged for lier, but before
she started on her. journey the
terrible earthquake in the Orient
commanded all the attention and
energies of t the Red Cross and the
Russian bride was not taken to
Manila. .,
Over a year later, she followed
him to Manila, but shortly, after
wards the marine was transferred
to the -Ualted States and the wife
was left in the Phillippine Islands.
Because of some reason the wom
an was not secured transportation
upon the government ship, and it
remained for the Red Cross offic
ials to get busy.; They secured
her a Job, hut so far have been
unable to get her to the United
States. : ..
The marine is in Salem and
has not sufficient cash or proper
ty to pay the passage of his wife
to this country.

boring continued and then all
was silent (or fire minutes.
The experiment was repeated
while those belaw made their ob
servations. The tests occupied more than
two hours and at 4:50 p. m., after
Carmichael " had compiled his
data, be announced the surveys
made in locating the shaft were
correct, and that the experiments
were successful. The party toot:

determined, had been sunk where
it was intended, with relation to
its striking the care.
It may tap the cave within 10
or 20 reeti or wnere tjotiins was
caught, Carmichael said.
The drill, which had bored to
the 4 6 foot level early in the after-,
noon, successfully passed through
a six fot limestone strata and was
halted again when the S3 foot
level was reached. With a six
foot limestone bed beneath; them,
miners in the shaft are In no dan
ger for the. present, according to
Dr. W. D. Funkhouser, of the Uni
versity of Kentucky. Progress in
sinking the shaft has not been so
successful, however.

The greatest helps in modern
medicine come through treating
glands. Many things are being

The greatest gland is the liver.
Ox gall is now used to make It
active. And to many of people
this gland method may mean new
health, new youth.
It Knds Poison si
You think, perhaps, that torpid
liver means merely constipation.
It means far more.
The liver supplies bile a quart
a day at normal. That bile checks
intestinal germs.
When the bile is scant, the
germs multiply by millions. They
eunplv the blood a constant stream
of poisons.
Then come the results of Impure

pies, dull eyes, falling hair.
But there are worse results.
Heart and kidney troubles often
result; high blood pressure, pre
