I THE CELERY INDUSTRY IN THE SALEM mSTRICT (Continued from pane 4) and of the head lettuce and aspar agus industries. Tbt will mean the mounting up very rapidly of the money returns to come into Salem district from far places. The. EMpmenta went. the past year in car lots as far away as the big Atlantic coast cities.-- vi. J This fact will allow, the reader to visualize the growth of the in dustry: There will bei probably 15.000,000 plants in this district this year, against the 2000 to 3000 plants 15 years ago. when-lhe in dustry was started there. Some growth! " - ; ' ' J : ' The Bl? Thinr . The big thing in the, celery' in dustry in the 'Salem district is the fact that ' we grow and. ship, the best in the United States. This is not an idle claim. The celery trade recognizes the fact; pays $1 mneo a r-rnta fnr nlir nolprv Ihnn , . " 7 Z 'rvZ for the California .product. The California growers shii east 4.000 1 5 00 cars . nnually of celery, I How long will it be till the Oregon powers increase" their- shipments vto as many rcarsr since they re- jceive the. extra $1 a crate, which I amounts to $160 to $180 a car ; in favor of the Oreeon nrodticts. The Oregon growers pack 1 6 0 to 180 crates in a car. The Oregon crates weigh about 180 pounds for the loose pack, and about ISO ( pounds for the washed ancl bunch ed celery., .. ..4 . vs ... The Oregon crate is larger lhan the standard crate, because of the large sizes of bur product- The Oregon crates are 22 by 24 Inches, and 22 inches high' ; They hold eight to ten dozen celery plants each. -' . i j ' . We Art? Away Ahead The Salem district is away ahead ot other i Oregon sections in the production of celery There: are two other nrincipal f Oregon dis tricts, at Troutdale j and St Mil waukie. Those two districts last ear shipped out of the state nearly 100 cars, though they sold a gopd deal of celery in the Portland mar kets. The growersi in the Mil- waukie and Troutdale districts are principally Creeks,-Italians. Chin ese and Japanese, with some Am ericans. The Salem district grow ers are principally Japanese; the By ED WHEELAN JttlUAt MOVE WU. TviE tSRUL &AN -Dfl MAKES NOW ? VJATCW TWlS ': roe. T& -Mbeiadvii 3 bi3 EPtsooe leaders being Americanized Jap anese, a number of them American citizens. -" v ; The Possibilities There are prospects! of rapid growth of the' celery industry on the Deaverdam lands east of the present large plantings; to say nothing of the asparagus industry and the other vegetable growing industries that flourish on those lands. j Mr. Fukuda has told the Slogan editor that in that section alone. 10,000 acres of beaverdam land is available for such crops; perhaps a good deal more. ; And there are many other sec tions in the Salem district where the same kind of land may be made available for celery growing. Celery will grow, on; almost any of the land in the Willamette val- ey, and make a good crop. But the kind that will stand up against all comers, and command a premium of $1 a crate against the celery of the famous California districts, can be counted upon, more certainly when grown on the beaverdam soil, and when produc ed under , the high Class cultural methods such as are; practiced by the Labish Meadows growers, and the first class packing and mer chandising methods they employ. With that kind of celery, our growers can. meet all competition. ; Tffey can go on increasing their plantings with perfect confidence that, with proper marketingfacil- ities. they can find a profitable sale for it even in the face ot bis. costs per acre for growing it. And celery is not a cheap crop to grow;. not a cheap per acre crop. ' The - Oregon, j. growers - market their celery through regular brok ers; through American firms that are experienced inj finding mar kets for the product. They know in advance about what they may expect. They are confident that they are not going to hare an over production; whatever may happen to growers of other sections who are unable to produce the quality grown here. j j American Legion Auxiliary Installs its New. A Product, lie Iixo It must be borne in-mind by all concerned with the celery business of the state that there are other neighboring and: not far distant states who are in the market with their celery- Utah for one exam ple. The survival of the fittest is true with -the growing and ship ping of all of our vegetables grown on a car lot basis! competing in the markets of the country. Oregon is bound to hold her own if the resent standard is maintained. We have the : requisite climatic, soil and water conditions to produce, a product de (luxe. As the rade knows this product better the markets will come this way. and Oregon will have a celery business that may-exceed the ideas of even the most optimistic. A. G. B. BOUQUET.
