Established asl Leading Factor for Relief of Human
Suffering
(By EDWARD T. BARBER)
: The complex character of human
nature has " made the question of
health and age the most baffling
which has confronted the race.
j All ages and races have given it
their most profound thought. Mod
ern science has contributed a very
large part of its efforts to the re
lief of human suffering. Many
schools of thought: have developed
from the different view point tait
en by their advocated as to the
cause and cure of .disease. ' Slow
ly, step by step, science has reveal
ed facts which materially change
the view point of those interested
In thn elimination of disease. A
hidden truth, when ohee revealed.
must stand the acid test of doubt,
distrust, skepticism, prejudice and
selfishness of those whose pet
ideas, beliefs and theories are dis
turbed by it before it i&U establish
itself beyond controversy. It must
literally fight its was? Into public
recognition over the opposition and
prejudices 01 tngae wuuw iicjwu
interests are disturbed by its revel
ation. Such is the record or Chi
ropractic science. ! Less than a
feneration ago Dr. Dj D. Palmer's
studies led him to the conclusion
that all bodily conditions of health
and disease were determined' en
tirely bv the action, or inaction, of
the nervous system, centered in the
brain. So long as ihp entire ner
vous system functioned properly
nerfect health was the result. The
moment any portion of the nervous
system failed to function properly
an abnormal condition, called dis
ease, resulted in whatever portion
of the body was served by the af
fected nerve. He reasoned that
the term "disease" 'as generally
used, was applied to symptoms of
nerve disturbance antl that to re
move the cause of th disturbance
would result In' nature removing
th disease. He Instituted a long
and exhaustive search tor the cause
of nerve disturbances. wis re
search led him to cpnclude that
they were located In the spine, and
were Invariably due to a pinching
or binding of the nerve fiber at
its point of exit ; from the spinal
column; that this was due to some
greater or lesser dislocation of the
vertebrae, a slipping! of the Joint
which restricted the normal action
of the nerve. ' l - !

If his conclusions were correct,
it was evident, that adjusting the
spine to normal position would re
lieve the nerve disturbance and
nature- would soon restore the af
fected portions of the body to nor
mal activity, or health.! The suc
cess of many thousands of experi
ments convinced Dr. Palmer of the
correctness of his conclusions and
that he had discovered ; a hitherto
tiknown principal which he named
"Chiropractic." j;
Since Chiropractic deals only
with the cause, of disease, and lo
cates all causes in the (spinal col
umn, its practice does not extend
beyond the art of relieving the
cause of all disease by adjusting
the abnormal condition found in
the spine, the ordinary terms,
"cure," 'treatment," etc., do not
annlv to Chiropractic ! and the
T W T. i1
term "adjustments" is used.
Adjustments remove the cause
permit nature to function unhamp
ered and the cure inevitably fol
lows. ""Treatments" are methods
or remedies applied to the parts
indicated by the symptoms, or re-i
suits, of a pinched nerve,
Chiropractic 1 diagnosis consists
in locating the mal-adjustment in
the spine. It Is not concerned with
the name or nature of the disease
which is but a sympton or effect
of the mal-adjustment. Its prac
tice is confined to making the ad
instments necessary, to restore
normal nerve action, j;
Against strong, violent and viru
lent nnrtosition chironractic has
steadily, gained a standing in pub
lic and scientific circles as a rec
ognized school of practice in the
relief of human suffering. Aside
from the vast throng of those re
stored to health j there are 200,
000 people today taking daily ad
justments.. : -

supplemented by a sufficient quan
tity to fill the demand. t : -
No other one thing would go far
ther in building up a fine domestic
market for farm, orchard and gar
den produce, than a well organiz
ed co-operative spirit, among pro
ducers fof the purpose of studying
the market demands, then agree
among themselves as to the am
ount, the kind and quality to be
produced. Here is an illustration:
t In a neighboring state straw,
berrr growers complained of the
cannery paying a price too low to
Justify picking, and many acres of
berries in that section were not
picked. The cannery paid 6e per
oound. The - cannery manager
stated that out of 40 tons pur
chased that season but 5 tons were
first class table berries,-the bal
ance had to be used for jams, etc;
That each farmer - insisted upon
growing the kind of berry be liked
best with a result that as many
varieties were on the market as
there were farmers; that the can-
ner would have, been glad. tojmy

of, producer, dealer and consumer.
In the great Snake river valley
where from - IS to 20 thousand
cars of potatoes are grown annut
ally a scabby potato Is looked upon
as almost as much of a menace to
the community as a man running

Oregon farms in the line of fruits
