. "Thrift Week" generally brings
Improre his floancial. condition
especially called to propositions of . Jife. insurance, saTiivga ..accounts,
postal eaYinss. and many other schemes of ..getting ahead financially.
In.my mind, oiifc Ot.the most important elements in any person's sucr
cess Is, rgood credit," or the reputation of meeting one's obHgitions
as promised. . '
The most f itat eletient of all business is "gbQ,d credit." t Is the
very foundation of odr foreign trade. AmeriQun business wotild be
paralyzed If it should be suddenly
"credit system."
" Thejiuccess of the "credit syatemll, depends. uponthe. Jntegiity of
each indlvldnai; his promptness In meeting his obligations J Today,
the tendency Is More than -ever to sell commodities on deferred pay
ments.. There are many advantages.ia this. jlan.t. It. gives the bjnyr
the; use of an article -while paying for it, and makes possible many
luxuries which otherwise could not be had, or at least not so soon.
Thousands of families .would still be paying rent, unable to own a
home of their own If It were not for the "credit system." It brings
such luxuries as automobiles, good furniture, and many other things
within the reach of nearly every one. i : - J S . S
The success of this system of buying depends upon the prompt
ness with which the Individual meets the payments as they. become
due. In accepting the benefits of credit, the buyer .assumes th.e
responsibility of seeing, that the payments are made as per agreement.
The merchant extends credit because he has .confidence In. the buyer.
Laxity of payment destroys confidence. Promptness ip making pay
ments establishes good credit. , -"t- i h . ; ,
- This is. the first day in "National ..Thrift Weell". 4nd has been
designated as "Pay Your' Bills Pay." , No finer start could be, made
toward- thrift than by paying up accounts that are due and. making
let accounts drag on, but it has its reflection od one'B credit. y
paying promptly, it will soon become a Mabit. When the. time comes
that one has an opportunity to nse hjs credit to .good advantage, it
wilt be extended to him gladly. His merchant, of binker will already
know of bis prompt methods and will have the confidence lit Aim
that he deserves. : ; ;:,;" t.
1 "Good credit" is a big asset . and one well worth striving for.
Start the habit today by paying up all due accounts,. and by. making
aa effort to be prompt. Promptness inspires confidence. It is an
evidence of thrift. Signed, C. S. HAMILTON, President Salem Busi
ness Men's League, i i ; "- !
(The above was Intended for The Statesman of last Saturday; but
the person to whom : the copy was entrusted for delivery did not
deliver it through a mistake or misunderstanding. It is too good a
contribution to the spirit of Thrift Week to, be omitted; tBerefore it
b printed both out of its order anil Its intended plaCe in the paper).
GRESHA3I FARMERS
There must be an unusually
progressive set of farmers around
Gresham. They refuse to let the
manufacturers 'Influence them to
make a fight on the children of
America. At a recent convention
where 500 were assembled, they
almost unanimously endorsed the
child labor legislation. i
A most unfair campaign Is be
ing, made. The truth has been
misrepresented to the farmers and
many of - them do not see it and
will not! see it until it Is too late.
The child labor bill will help the
farmers. No congress ever did.
or ever will prohibit children from
laboring on the ' farms. la. fact
theyfwill be encouraged to djtToui
door work just as they should be.
There nevier will be a" more dras
tic labor law passed In America
than ' the one in . Oregon today;
and. we submit that it ia unfair for
Oregon citizens, who , bare every
thing they need int. the way of
legislation, to Join in to keep the
chiidren of other states In the
sweatshops. L It , is an awful re
sponsibility to assume. .
CHILDREN AT THE FAIR
. .The state fair is an institution
of interest to every citizen of Ore
gon. One : department has been
growing out of all bounds nd
that is the boys' and girls' club
department, This has gone so far
thai there 4s a demand for a
bulfdrag, and that demand ought
to be met by the present legisla
ture. . ' ..
It may be permissible to quib
ble over many things, but when it
com'e.S . to helping the children
there should -be no quibbling, no
Cvejay, .Machinery should be put
In motion to give the children
every opportunity for develop
ment, especially , along agriculta-
ril pines. Oregon is an agricultu
ral state and we must encourage
Our ' children to be better farmers
