Dr. Thomas Ross tonight issued
the following statement in reply
to Governor - Pierce's order in
which he said:
'"Governor Pierce failed to obey
the law, by undertaking summar
ily to remove me from office. , lie
now cites me to show cause and
says he has certain affidavits in
his possession to prove that at
one time I purchased liquor and
that I have been extravagant in
Office.
"I deny these charges and at the
hearing r shall demand that I be
confronted with witnesses so they
may be cross examined and that
exparte affidavits with irrespons
ible persons be excluded."
Attack With Knife Not
; ; True, Woman Declares
Ida Oakley entered a plea of
not guilty when she was arraigned
in Judge Kuntz's court yesterday
on a charge of attacking Mrs.
Mary Martin with a knife. Bail
was placed at $500, and Mrs. Oak
ley was placed in the county jail
when the money was not forth
earning.' The squabble is said to
have taken place near Mehama,
where both women live.
Mrs. Oakley was brought to Sa
lem, by Constable Walter D Long
and Mrs. .Nena JVhite, matron at
the county Jail. .Thl warrant was

When , arraigned,. Mrs. Oakley
stated repeatedly and in a number
of different ways, 'that she did not
believe any papers were filed
against her, ' that she had never
seen Mrs. Martin, that she did not
attack her, and that she did not
believe she was attacked.

EUGENE, Or., Dec. 16. Mrs.
Will Goettling, wife of the Uni
versity of Oregon professor who
caused a nation-wide sensation
when he kidnaped from his wife
their small daughter at Boston
last year and then fled, it is be
lieved to Japan, was granted a
divorce and. $7,500 alimony in the
Lane county circuit court here to
