FOR you 5EETNC tsHin w RELEASE OF WED ILL FLOOD RELICS Opening of Muscle Shoals Dam Will Destroy Old Indian Village WASHINGTON, Dec. 4. ( A P ) The opening of the big Wilson Dam at Muscle Shoals during 1925 will blot out a laboratory of science. Under the direction of Dr. J. Walter Fewkes, chief of the Bureau of American Ethnology of the Smithsonian Institution. Ger rard Fowke, a trained scientific worker, has been exploring Indian mounds at Muscle Shoals that will be covered with water, when tho big Wilson Dam Is put into com mission. The relics which Mr. Fowke found are being packed up to be sent to the institution for study. Just whaTtndian tribe they belonged to, remains to be determined. , The Tennessee Valley Historical Society invited Dr. Fe wkes to have the mounds explored and he sent Mr. Fowke to excavate them at the mouth of Town Creek, Colbart county, Alabama, some two months ago. Dr. Fewkes also made a trip to the point recently and brought back, with nim to Washington some of the scientific finds. They include copper ornaments,' beads and a species of breastplate, show ing. Doctor Fewkes said, that the T. Jl . 1 . 1 1 1 inaians to woom iney ueiongeu prized that metal highly. Mr. Fowke took two representa tive mounds and" found that one was a large mound of mussel shell.') and the other a burial mound. The countless shells of mussels, which the Indians apparently took, from; the Tennessee river, are remains: of their feasts. With a variation! in the spelling Dr. Fewkes ex plained, the fresh .water mussels in that river gave their name to; Muscle Shoals. . - ; . The debris usually found In an j Indian village was encountered in the mussel mound, interspersed with flint heads, knives, frag ments of pottery and stones used; In cooking. Barbecue holes for; cooking animals in were located. ' 'Mr. Fowke. in a report recently submitted to Dr. Fewkes,. said many skeletons were unearthed, often with big stones weighing 20 tc 3$ . pounds placed upon them. On account of the cotton cultiva-j t ion he was unable to give the exact height of the mound, but, estimated it at nine feet. Traces of a village and of fire use to cook the mussels were found in tho vicinity. . Pedestrians of Berlin Insist Upon Jay Walking BERLIN. Dec. 4. (By the AP.) Berlin is having a hard tiiai putting through its new rattk regulations, which for the mcti part are patterned-upon American models. In fact this capital, in which ' cabinet crises are so Ire-? quent as to be uninteresting, U now developing what may be termed a traffic crisis. Next to campaign news the discussion pro and con of the new regulations for: venicies ana pedestrians occupies most space in the daily press. -The difficulty seems to be two-: fold: First, the lack of discipline of the pedestrians, and second, the, unorganized admixture of push-; carts, autos, electric cars, buses,! bicycles and horse-drawn vehicles in the streets. : 1 The Berlin pedestrian regards it as, his inalienable right to cross the street wherever and however he pleases. He will throw him-? self into the confused jumble of; vehicles of every description in: the middle of the street and insist upon crossing without waiting till, he reaches a street intersection.? Until the German can be tausrhr to bow to the same rules when he is out walking as govern his prog ress when he Is riding,- the en-j forcement of traffic regulations will be rendered illusory. j United States Leads in j Foreign French Legion PARIS. Dec. 4. (AP) Crosses awarded in war time and during the reconstruction period have in creased the membership of the Legion. of Honor from about 15. 000 in 1914 to approximately 150,000 in 1924. Of the present total 120,000 members are French, In the foreign contingent the United States stands high with 1500 members, including six Grand. Crosses, the supreme rank. 21 Grand Officers, 189 Command ers, 550 Officers and about 800 Knights. This formidable growth in the last 10 years is due principally to the fact that in war time there is no limit to the crosses that may be conferred for military valor.
