The Business and Profession
al Women are anticipating for
this evening a program in at
tractive keeping with Oregon
Authors' Week, with Grace E.
Hall of The Oregonian Invited to
present the program. The oc
casion will be the regular 6:30
o'clock club dinner with the pro
gram following at 8 o'clock, both
program and dinner being in the
Chamber of Commerce rooms.
Grace E. Hall is doubtless one
of Oregon's most widely ? read
poets both by, virtue of her poems
appearing practically daily in 'rne
Oregonian and by her two books,
"Patchwork" and "Homespun."
For the meeting this evening
the" members of the Writers' Iub
are invited to be special guests.
The Sweet Briar club will meet
this afternoon; at the home of Mrs.
Ferd Allen. j

Lena Belle Tartar, contralto,
who is to appear in concert in
Corvallis on the evening of Friday
December ,5, has. received recent
favorable comment by music cri
tics of the Northwest and, because
she began her musical career In
Corvallis, her friends here will be
interested in the ; following words
of praise of her j work, published
In the Northwest Musician :
; "Miss Tartar opened her pro
gram with two lovely old Italian
ballads of the 17th and 18 cen-
ture. which were given with finely
sustained tone and unaffected
charm. . i 1
"Then followed the great aria
Divinites du Styx, from Gluck's
'Alceste In this the wide range
and flexibility of Miss Tartar's
rich contralto was displayed to the
utmost advantage. The aria; one
of the most beautiful in song-liter
ature, was sung with a keen sense
of dramatic values.
A word of appreciation is also
due Miss Tartar for the style of
programs proTlded which other
recitalists could emulate with ad'
vantage as each number was giv-
en a brief annotation which adds
greatly to Its enjoyment and ap
jreciation by the audience -Such
programs serve to make, a recital
immeasurably' more interesting to
the average concert-goer. The
proof of this Is demonstrated by
the fact that an annotated pro
gram is almost invariably carried
home for future reference, instead
of being left to litter: the floor
as is too frequently the case other
wise." . .
, Miss Tartar is to sing Divinites
du Styx, .with other numbers, at
the Corvallis concert next week.
