8 SUNDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 23, 1924 New Statistics Give Lie to Allegations from police - departments of 300 leading cities and the District of Columbia, covering all states ex cept North Carolina and Oklaho ma. The survey, the most exten sive ever made, was compiled by Robert E. Corradini of the World connection . with ; police - depart ments throughout the country, it is submitted to the press by Dr. Ernest II. Cherrington,- general secretary of the league. The survey covers the ' total number of arrests in the last four years prior to inhibition and the first four years under prohibition. It is true that the numbe of ar rests of the dry period is greater than the number for the wet per iod, but when analyzed in connec tion with the incease of popula tion, which is 5,000,000,-the find ings are contrary to the much too prevalent belief that America is growing more criminal. : 4 There has actually been a de crease in arrests for drunkenness since the Volstead act went into effect and that decease is 42.3 per cent. for. the 300 cities, or a million" fewer cases of drunken ness than there were In the v : period, - for : the whole nati: Where formerly drunkenness cc es were made up 32.5 per ccn of the total arrests in the cou:. tryfthey now have been cut t 18.8 per cent. 3ft- ZJt' NEW YORK, Nov. 23.
