Boy First Thought Drowned

That Eldon Quinland, 14, son of
John Quinland, chief engineer of
the state prison, is alive has beep
definitely proven by word received
by Warden A. M. Dalrymple from
Oakridge, Ore., in Lane county,
where Quinland and B. Lr(Pee
wee) Sherman, escaped eonvict,
had been held, overnight in jail.
Young Quinland was positively
identified. ' -
Doth Quinland and Sherman dis
appeared from Salem on the same
day, about three weeks ago. Sher
man was a trusty and engaged in
hauling slop to the hog pen. He
tied tip his horse and vanished.

clothes were found on the bank
of the Willamette river near West
Salem and for several days it was
believed that he had been d row ti
ed. Later events gave rise to con
siderable doubt and the search
for his body in the river was dis
continued, i
Young Quinland and Sherman,
traveling together. ; were I taken
Into custody "at Oakridge and
placed in a flimsy jail. . During a
fire Monday night and the subse
quent excitement, the pair man
aged to make their escape. Sher
man was picked up in Green
River, Wyo., according to word
received here yesterday, but no
mention was made regarding the

to bring Sherman back. : (

closed tomorrwo. Then the day
of atonement begins on Tuesday
at 6 p. m.f and continues . ror ten
days.
Fasting will egin at G o'cloq
the afternoon of tomorrow ana
will not be broken till G o'clock
Tuesday evening. During thts
period no member of the faith will
eat. drink or smoko.
A number; of Salem stores will
be Hosed tomorrow, and some ot
them again later in the month.1
