The Influence of One Life
In: the Christian Endeavor
World. Fred Lockley writes about
an Incident of 'interest to States
man readers.
In; Longfellow's poem, "The Ar
row and the Song," he says:
'I shot an arrow Into the air.
It! fell to earth, I knew not
' I where. ! '
I breathed a song into the air, ,
It fell to earth, I know not '
j where, f
Long, long afterward in an dak.
I found the arrow, still unbroke,
And the song from begin ningLtO
j : end
I found again in the heart of a
t friend." -
' I 1 -i ' i: - '-.".-'
How ltUle we know of the con
sequences which will come from
our ; acts! Clairborne Shepard
was born and reared on a farm
in Spring Valley, Dr., a few-miles
from the Willamette River. The
union church 'as on a corner of
their farm. The Shepard boys
and girls attended Sunday school
and the Christian Endeavor soci
ety here for many years. One by
one the children went away to col-,
lege. Claiborne went to the Ore-
gon Agricultural College at Cor
vallis. In those days Christian
Endeavor societies were not so
numerous as in these days; so he
became a member of the college
Y.M.C.A., which" had been organii
zed not long before. He was
elected secretary,- and with some
of the other students conceived
th Idea of raising funds, to erect
a YIM.C.A. building at the college
Shortly before the necessary funds
were raised,' while on a trip over
he State securing money) he took
pneumonia and died. The fund
Was completed and a brick build
ing erected, which was christened
Sheprrd hall.
It would seem : that when he
died his work was over, but the
influence of his life and of his
early training is travelling on and
on in ever-widening circles. Some
months before his death he had a
long talk with one of his college
chums, J. C. Clark, whose only
plans for life involved his material
advancement.; He looked on the
has he'ped scores: and hundreds of
young men to higher ideals oi
civic responsibility, of Bervice, and
of Christian citizenship. -
Christian Endeavor society and
the church as very good places
for girls and women to go. Af.
far as, the Y.M.C.A. was concerned
he thought it was a place for
boys who, were sort of sissies to
gather and sing songs and to rel
ate their experiences. ; Shepard
talked toTiim seriously, and final
ly interested him. He saw that
the Christian life was a life that
could be lived by manly and coura
,geous men. He was converted and
joined the church. Having put
his hand to the plough he did
;not Intend to look back, so he took
bp Y. M. C. A.-work as a life
work. After his graduation" he
became boys secretary of the
Portland Y. M. C. A. After talk
ing with Fletcher Brockman and
Sherwood Eddy, both Of , whom
happened to visit Portland, he
definitely decided to give life to
the work for boys in China. To
day he is boys' secretary at Shang
hai, 'China, which is the largest
work for boys In the world. Here
Christian boys are being trained
who will become the future lead
ers of China. .
While Clark was boys' secretary
of the Y. M. C. A. .at Portland
he impressed himself on the lives
of hundreds of boys, and many of
these boys to-day are doing con
structive, altruistic work through
cut the PaciHc Northwest. One
of the boys he got hold ot was J.
C. Mehaan, who organized a. Bible
class, and becoming interested in
the work, later became boys, secre
tary in Clark's place, and is the
present boys' secretary of the
Portland Y. M. C. A. Few men
In Portland have accomplished
more with boys than J. C. Mehaan.
Each year he takes a group 'of
from seventy-five to one hundred
boys to Spirit Lake, where for
several months they camp out
Here at this camp he is able to
get close to the boys and impress
them with his ideals of fair play,

Ever Sink"
WISCASSET, Me., Sept. 27-
- While it is tile general impres
sion mat an iceberg win stay a
float, a local friend of Captain
Donald B. JVfacMillan tells how a
Newfoundland fisherman almost
convinced the famous Arctic ex
plorer that icebergs drifting from
the far North: finally become
water logged and. with much
bubbling, disappear below the
surface. . - ,
The explorer insists that ice.
whether it be frozen in the shape
of-a great berg, or just a plain
cake, will always float, but the
fisherman was - equally insistent
that he had not only watched the
bergs go under, but he had actual
ly 1 seen1 them at the bottom.
MacMillan saw that further argu
ment was useless and demanded
proof. V : ''
This was what the fisherman '
harl been looking for, but flrsth-fe)
wanted to cast a little official
light on the mat'er by making it
the subject of awager. MacMil- '
lan finally agreed that he would
stand treat if the other jvould
point out a real honest iceberg,
in a place wher3 ice is never1
found, at the bottom of the Eea. r 0
A little sail boat was by the
shore and the explorer waa invit-,
cd to step inside. The wind took
the sail and, in a short Ume, the
voyagors were several miles out
from land. "Now then," said, the ;.
fisherman, "look down there and .
tell me what you see." '
. MacMillan peered over the edge 1
and sure enough he saw an ice
berg resting solidly on the bottom.
The fisherman grinned- triumph
antly as they headed the boat
back to chore. MacMillan paid
the wager like a sportsman, but
did not have the heart to say that
In the center of the ico he had ,
seen a Doulder welshing many
tons. !
