THE OREGON STATESMAN, SALEM, OREGON WEDNESDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 10, 1924 audred Bunch - ; N INTERESTING and gratify , ' ing picture is conjured In the minds of Salem people who stop to 'consider what it means to have the children of the hop pickers of " the valley cared for by competent ' workers who are carrying'out that phase cf social service known as Migrant Work In various of the local yards. Such a program ia being carried out at the Bell hop yard, at the Livesley yard, and at the Our bin and Conoyer farm with. In all cases, the splendid - cooperation of the owners. - ' ; A visit at the Durbin yard made by. Miss Constance Kantner gives some -i surprisingly - . interesting facts. I J is at this yard that Mrs. Robbins and her daughter. Miss Cants Robbins, are in charge. Up from the yard, more adjacent to the. buildings, a certain space is , fenced joff known as the "Kiddy t!amp" jwhere the children assem ble,, being brought in by their par- 1 ents. at S o'clock in the morning. On Saturday 40 i children, with ages ranging front five' months to 10 years, were rn the camp under the careful supervision of Mrs. Robbing, who knows just hoW . to motherj the llttlA ones, and, .Miss Robbins, who has endless ingenu ' ity in arranging for them instruc tive pastimes. Each child through out the day wears a colored slip of Jpaper on which his name Is written. . h " A tooth brush drill comes, early on the morning's program. An- ' other feature is the appointment of the elder girls as "little moth- ers each with one for the ydung- , er children untier ' her especial care. 'At "10:30 ; the youngsters artf divided Into .groups for the mid-morning lanch - hour, One group goes to ''Sandwich. , Ave nue" while a second goes . to "Cracker Lane." 4 Each . morning each i child - is given a glass of . milk by Mrs. Robbins. Discipline - at tb camp is effi ciently attended to, by a qqiet re treat Called "punishment bench." Before returning the children to their private camps at the noon hour, each, little tot is washed and made as clean as possible. The generosity of the Salem , women has made It possible to furnish -. complete sets of clothing for the children, in a number of instances. Medical care is given the little ills which sometimes amount to badly neglected burns, and sometimes hop poison. . Miss Kantner spoke of one condition existing in -camp which was a matter of neglected adenoids. One mother, who Is deif; herself, has never heard the volees Of any of her children, com Wednesday, lliorsday, Friday, Saturday We Offer the Biggest Vaiues In Brahd Nexy Wool Dress Goods tHat Salem Has Ever Known 111 1 1 Right in the fcheS leason The Smartest of the Season's New Patterns i " ".ri-.f Included . '1 f With the children returning' to the camp at 1 o'clock, a definite afternoon program is followed. At 2 o'clock every child under six years old goes into the tents for a nap. The older (children are amused in the meantime with var ious types of handiwork. On Sat urday Miss Kantner showed them how to make little woven mats of colored strips of papier.' At" 3:30 the children are made ready for their mid-afternoon Kunch. After this. Miss Robbins j spends the time in drilling the youngsters in a little playlet or charade to pre sent at the campEJre program in the evening. At 6 o'clock the chil dren are made neat 'and clean again and returned to; their home tents. " . - j . , ;:i ' - ' For the pleasure of her. daugh ter, trEJoise,; on her' fourteenth birthday, Mrs. B.
