The latest convert ; to Salera,
through his stay at the auto park,
is G. C. Denslow of Grand Junc
tion, Colo. A few months ago he
rented his property In Grand
Junction and headed for the west,
not knowing Just where be would
find a desirable home.
After being shown around the
city and surrounding country . Mr.
Denslow rented a home in the city
and announced his intention to
build a garage early next spring.
Salem and its surroundings al
so appealed to W, G. Wells of
Norfolk, Neb., and H, G Hoskins .
of Enola,- Neb. Both are young
married men on a trip to look for
a new location. They j both an
nounce that Salem and the Wil
lamette valley look " better than
any country through which they
have traveled. They are both reg
istered at the auto park.
Last night 31 new cars regis
tered at the. park. . As . with all
well equipped auto parks in the
northwest there is a charge of SO
cents for the first night and 25
cents for additional nights.

being made by the Chamber of
Commerce. More than' 5000 per
sons attended the show last year
and It is expected; this number
will be doubled this fall- The ex
position will be held in the arm
ory again this yearJ Special show

The first show was held in ths
Chamber of Commerce rooms,
with but two communities exhibit
ing:. Last year the industrial ex
position was added, 37 of the local
business firms and manufacturers
having reserved space at the arm
ory. In addition there were five
communities represented, at the
8bow. Brush College. North How
ell, Salem Heights, Labish Center
and Liberty. This number is ex-
pected to be doubled and to stim
ulate interest letters are being
sent out to all the : communities
of the district. ,
Judging will be on the same
basis this year as last, by scoring
the leading products of each dis
trict. In one section 'corn is the
leading product and in others
onions and celery. The show of
fers an unusual ; opportunity to
feature the variety of products
that are raised In the different
communities. The space allotted to
each community Is equal In size
and no distinctions are made.

A number of years ago when I
was a young man I used to work
in the sugar beet fields of Colo-,
rado. There was no uch thing as
welfare work then,; but the com-'
pany did go to the expense of
providing a tennis court and cro
quet grounds. Ground there waa
very hard, and how do you think
they were made?. By covering the
ground with sand, then pjouring
on molasses and letting it dry. It
was rolled from lime to time. My
recollection Is that's the hardest
surface I ever knew. I don't be
lieve It could have been chopped
with an axe.
I have been thinking out here
In the Waldo h(lls why we couldn't
build roads ia Marlon county oat
of gravel andmolasaes. We have
both of them here in an abundant
supply..; . I would like to see the
county court take this up and
make a test of it; on some half
