. C. M, Roberts, who was connect
ed with the Salem Lumber Co. for
18 years, has sold his stock and
will take a vacation tor a few
weeks. Mr. Roberts plans a ten

Yost Pleads Guilty
Changing his mind, Carl Yost,
of the Ablpua district, appeared
in the justice court Monday and
entered a plea of guilty to a
charge of unlawfully setting a fire.
He was fined, $5 and costs by, P. J.
Kuntz, justice of the peace. Yost
was 'arrested Saturday by J.; N.
Ferguson, deputy fire warden, and
demanded a jury trial.

Sunday was a busy day for State
Traffic Officer H. L. Griffith, who
haled nine traffic violators Into
the Justice court, where an even
$100 in fines were hivied. The
arrests were made on the Pacific
highway, between Salem and Can
by, which district has been assign
ed to Traffic Officer Reinhart af
ter this week, Griffith going to
the Canby-Oregon: City section.

both of Roseville, $15 each; Mel
vin Clodfeller, of Jefferson, $15;
S P. Housen, of Salem, $10, and

Kendall Trial Thursday III
Selection of a jury to try Albert
W. Kendall will take place in the

Kendall was arrested upon com
plaint of Luther Snow, who alleges

ty clerk yesterday disclose the

World war are losing property
which they put up as security in

Booze Owner Arrested
Possession of intoxicating liq
uor cost Phil Bowen $100 when
he : came before Marten Poulsen,
police judge, Monday. Bowen was
arrested at State and Twenty-fifth
streets Saturday night by Officers
Olson and Wiles. He was released
under bail for this week-end, the
bail being equal to the amount of
the fine.

Col. Robert A. ; Miller of Port
land, one of the democratic can
didates for presidential elector,
was in Salem yesterday, on his
way home after making a tour of
western Oregon. With him was
Walter Hembree of McMinnville,
Candidate on the democratic tick
et for secretary of state. They
reported finding a decided La Fol
lette sentiment In some of the
districts which they visited.
The Paradise City
J. B. Lehman of Nez Perce, Ida.,
is visiting Salem, which he is
pleased to call the paradise city
of Oregon. He has two sons here,
U. J. and S. W. Lehman. He has
been attending a meeting at Port
land of the state district of Ore
gon of the Church of the Brethren
(Dunkards) formerly known as
the German Baptists. The word
Dunkard is a corruption of a Ger
man word which means dipping.
Mr. Lehman was for a long time
a resident of Marion county, where
he had a farm, in what is known
as the Bethel school district, three
and a half miles east of the pen
itentiary. He will start home to
Idaho tomorrow. ; -
Park Fund Low . 'l'
Because the city park fund hai
been called upon in excess this
season, the park committee has
received permission from the city
council to transfer approximately
800 from the auto park fund, the
shortage to be met with a special
appropriation in the next budget
of the council. - n making the re
quest members of the park com
mittee explained that the. season
has been unusually dry and it has
been, necessary to spend more
money for water and other inci
dentals to keep the parks in shape
and that the committee authorized
the expenditure of $326.40 for re
pairing the Walte and Breyman
fountains. There is a balance of
$1600.42 on hand in the auto park
fund at present.

Drunk Man Jailed r
Claiming to be a government
man and also an ex-sheet metal
worker, a man giving the name of
Ed Reed was taken into custody,
last night by Officer Louis Olson.
Reed was booked for being drunk
(on a diluted canned heat concoc
tion) and with' breaking glass on
the pavement. As a search of his
person netted about $2, it is prob
able he will be ordered out of
town today to Iteep from feeding
him in jail for the next few weeks.

In minor automobile accidents
In Salem and vicinity over the
week-end. four persons were
slightly injured. Harry G. Smith,
of Portland, complained to the po
lice that his automobile was
crowded, from the highway about
five miles north of Salem by a
machine driven by L. Anderson,
also of Portland, Mrs. Smith and
Mrs. L. B. Leroets receiving slight
injuries. Lillie Beatty, of 872
North Commercial, reported that
a defective peering gear caused
an accident! on the River road

Lusk, of Pottland owner of the
car, and Janette Chrlstensen. ; of
Salem to a local hospital where
they had cuts about the face

Reserve Officers to. Meet ....
Members of the Salem Sector of
the Reserve Officers association
will hold a dinner at the Gray
Belle next Tuesday night at .6: 15
o'clock. A general discussion of
events of interest to the officers
will be a feature of the meting.

The. local committee recently

Poorman Takes Exai
An examination for the grade
of firBt lieutenant in the quarter
master corps,! subsistence depart
ment, reserve officers corps, was
taken last night by F. W. Poor
man, secretary of the state board
of control. The examination was
held in the headquarters of the
382nd infantry at the postoffice.
The papers ' are being forwarded
to Washington, D. C, and a reply
is not anticipated much less than
two month..

Carey Held Three Days Be
cause ot Defective
Requisition Papers -
J. A. Carey, guard from the
Oregon penitentiary, who nearly
a month ago was sent to Mexico
City to return Albert :.( White;
whose . parole from the Oregon
prison had! been revoked, was
thrown into jail in . Mexico City
because he did not have the prop
er papers when he attempted to
take White : across the border in
handcuffs, according to a tele
gram received . by ' state prison
authorities. ; He carried extradi
tion papers from : Washington,
D.C., but apparently they were,
defective.. A later telegram re
ceived yesterday by Deputy War
den Lilly from Carey stated that
he had been released and request
ed that $200 be telegraphed him.
The money ; was sent and he was
Instructed to proceed to 'Phoenix,
Ariz., with his prisoner, and at
that city pick up Fred Blake, who
Is being held for Oregon authori
ties. , : . i- -
2 MEN ESCAPE

Tom Murray, Bank Robber,
and Eugene Kidder,
Burglar, Quit Prison
Sawing the iron bars where
the flume emerges from the pris
on wall and diving and swiming
to freedom, Tom Murray, Florence
bank robber and Eugene Kidder,
serving a 10-year sentence from
Jackson county -for burglary,
made their escape from the pen
itentiary during a baseball game
Sunday afternoon and last night
were still at liberty with no clues
as to their present address.
The escape was made between
3 : 1 5 and 4 : 3 0 o'clock, when a
check of the prisoners was made.
The time; is fixed by the inspec
tion of the flume bars at 3:15
o'clock by principal: keeper C. M.
tact. When the men were count
ed after the baseball , game, the
two men were missing. -
Murray has given ' the prison
authorities no end of trouble. It
was : he who organized and ; on
March 28 led a gang of convicts
through a hole- in ' the southern
end of the main building, over
the wall by the guard tower and
then to the highway, where a
passing automobile ! was ; com
mandeered, taking i with him
Ellsworth Kelly, Joe Jackson
William Johnson, Clive Weekly
and "Oregon" Jones. Jones is
still at large. About two months
ago he was found to ; have been
the leader of a -.tunneling exped
ition that had started operations
from a woodpile Inside the pris
on yard toward the north walL
He spent some time in the bull
pen for this escapade.
Murray Is doing 20 years for
bank robbery and has a term in
San Quentin ' waiting ' for him
upon the expiration of his sen
tence here. Prison guards char
acterize him as a dangerous

Brush and Grass Fire Near
1 City Runs Over Several
Hundred Acres.

workers, five members of the Sa
lem fire department spent several
hours Monday before' aHhreaten
Ing brush fire southeast of Salem
was gotten under control. . The
fire department was called at
11:50 o'clock and did not return
to the station until a little after
3 o'clock. Several hundred acres
lying south of the Tarnef road
were burned over and; one old
house destroyed. The tract burned
was nearly three-quarterssof a
mile long and about half a mile
