the $3000 required for the im
provements was raised Sunday
among the leaguers at the insti
tute, principally at the morning"
service. , This money will provide
only for the necessary materials
in caring for the plans, the labor
to - be supplied j by volunteers
among the leaguers. Improve
ments to the amount of $4000
have already been ; expended upon
the . Institute grounds, and this
hew addition will bring the value
of the institute holdings well over
$10,000. j
Sunday proved to be a day of
great things, the attendance being
between 800 and 1000 at the 11
o'clock morning Service directed
by Rev. I. B. Wood of Corvallis,
director of life service at the in
stitute. The first (service of the
day was at 8 o'clock, directed by
Dr. E. C. Hickman, dean of the
institute. Dr. Hickman had given
stirring evening j addresses
throughout the week leading up
to this event, but this service con
sisted wholly of j the simple but
eloquent testimonials of the stu
dents, after which a call for life
service decisions; was made to
which more than 75 responded.
The great caiiip-flre service of the
night before had been Interupted
by a squall of rain, but the meet
ing repaired toj the tabernacle
and 43 conversions resulted.
At 11 o'clock Sunday morning.
Dr. Wood of Corvallis preached an
eloquent sermon, pleading for
full time service for Christ. At
3 in the afternoon. Miss Winifred
L, Chappell of New York City,
assistant secretary of the Metho
dist Federation for Social Service,
save one of the most stirring ad
dresses! of the Institute week. Her
themri dirpcted Itiself nronnrl lhn
respective three great problems of
the last three generations, that oL
the grandfathers being the aboli
tion of slavery, thatof the fa
thers of this generation being tlie
abolition of the open saloon, and
that of the present generation, she
a'd, was the abolition of war.
The speaker's statements were
-.trong, provoking . much discos
iloii, particularly that in which
she denounced as non-Christian
the spirit of national defense day,
proclaimed for September 12. St
strong had the sentiment been
regarding this event that a resolu
tion was introduced by Leroy
Walker, president of. the student
council, to the institute at the
night service, it having previously
been before the faculty and the
student council ; of the Institute.
This resolution and the action
taken regarding'it will be present
ed to the governor and fuller
mention will be 'given in a separ
ate article. The night service at
8 o'clock was ; presided over by
Leroy Walker, leader of the gos
pel team, other, members being
Miss Laura Pemberton of Salem,
Miss Eugenia ' .Savage of Salem.
Miss Louise Kaufman of Falls
City, Louis Rbdgers of McMinn
ville. arid Rev, C. G. Wrenn of
Florida. These each gave a short
laiK coupiea wun ineir own per
sonal experience after wbich the
appeal was made for decisions for
Christ and for life service.'
Two important banners were
awarded on Saturday night, the
recreation contest proving a tie
between the Salem and Portland
districts. Salem district had four
events to Portland's two, when on
Saturday the faculty team played
the winners in each event win
ning two from Salem, and losing
two to Portland, which tied the
score between the two districts.
The events were baseball, volley
ball, horseshoes, and bean bas.
In addition, croquet aud tennis
were on the program of games for
the week. The efficiency banner
for the institute was won again
h tha Mnnra villa chanter of
Portland, with G8 points out of a
perfect score of 100, the inter
mediate chapter of First church,
Salem, nosing in second place
with 54 points. j
The entire Jnstitute week was
conceded by all to be the hlli
point in the history of the Insti
tution, great credit being due to
the untiring efforts -and splendid
supervision of Dean Hickman and
his faculty, which, besides several
local men, included Dr. Luther
Irfrvejoy pf the life service com
mission of the Methodist church,
and Dr. H. . C. WiTson of Seattle.
One of the high points of the
week proved' to, be the evening
address, of Bishop Johnson, re
cently assigned to this episcopacy,
in- which he ; gave a graphic ac
count of some of .his African ex
periences and their relation to the
present talents of the youns peo
ple of Methodistism.
