The chamber of commerce
just sent out a list of new
residents in Salem. The list
is a good one. It shows that
Salem is attracting people
from all over America. They
are coming from the four cor
ners of the earth and remain
ing here because, they like it.
A i btatesman representative
frequently visits the auto park
and is astonisnea at the ta
vorable sentiment towards Sa
lens and the Willamette Val
ley. One man was asked 5 to
write a letter and here is what
he wrote: ;
"I am not a stranger in Sa
lem. I lived here-for a num
ber of years and then went to
St. Helens. I didn't do so well
there financially and have
come back here.

is a privilege to live in Salem.
It is also a privilege to do bus

"Editor Statesman
"For four7 years it has been
my custom to come to the city
of Salem and pick hops. I
have always, 'been well treated
but this year promises . the
best of all. -It happens that 1 1
have small children and it is
absolutely, :- necessary. J for
somebody to take 'care.,, of
them. I can not stay at home
with them because I must
make the money. I have
taken thenf with me to the
hop fields and it has been tor
ture all the time because I
Was never " satisfied to leave
my children in the haphazard
way it was necessary to do.
ii thank God that the Chris
tian women of Salem have
this year found it restinsr
heavily on their hearts to pro
vide schools and care for our
frecious children. ; Although
am a working woman and
wear poor clothes. I love my
babies as .few people ; love
them. Uh- uod. how 1! love
them! How I want to do for
them! I read the article of
Miss Shields Sunday and it
inade my heart rejoice. : It
I. means ushering in a new dav
(lor the hon workers. It means
'my precious babies will have
;the same attention as ) other
people's children. It means
