S SAY WRITERS
Salem Will R e a p Benefit
From the Sugar Beets and
Better Farm Prices '
A sugar mill is in the .off
ing. The Mormons are great
sugar producers and they
have come hereto investigate.
That means a sugar ! mill and
thousands of acres in sugar
beets. That brings us to the
point of the first letter this
week:
Editor Statesman:.
I was glad to notice that
some Mormons were in Salem
for the purpose of investigate
ing a sugar mill. ! I never
question a man's religion but
most certainly I will not in
this; Only last week I was
out near Jefferson and learn
ed that some sugar beets Were
to be planted next year as an
experiment. I know; it is not
an experiment because it hap
pens I was here when we ex
perimented before thg war
and but tor that upheaval we
would have had a suerar mill
here now. That upset every
calculation. Hi
Now normalcy , has "come
back and we ought to 'raise
sugar beets. I believe it
would be our one best bet. It
is almost a sure crop and it
brings good prices. The tariff
has a good deal tojdo with
that but this is a tariff coun
try and certainly we will not
vote against our own interest
this year. -; ; '
Very respectfully,
JAMES SINCLAIR,
This letter is another boost
for the Willamette valley but
from a different aneie. But
let the writer tell his own
story:
Editor Statesman :
While this is a Hrv war it
is not a bad one for business.
The farmers arej coming into
their own. True, our fruit
went for little or nothing but
we i have the consolation of
feeling that it was largely our
own fault. If we do not know
enough to organize we will
continue to make millionaires
of middle men. But what I
wanted to say was ! that the
farmers are coming to the
front mighty fast. They are
getting prices for their wheat
that will make them inde
Dendent. I heard almnn js.iv
; that he had justi threshed
ana nia yieia was 44 bushels

perity for the farmers.
With
condition it will make busi
ness of all lines; better for
Salem. ; t
This vear is our: nnnnrtnn.
jity. We must realize our de
'pendence upon the farms a-i;l
j be genuinely glad even if we
ao nave to pay a little more
lor our flour and bread.
Very respectfully, .
DAVID LONG.
YOU CAN HELP
Every Slogan issue of The
Statesman goes to people who
are interested in the subjects
treated. The Slogan editor
sees to that ; and j there are
coming to be more and more
, subscribers who take The
statesman for its special
Slogan articles alone.
The point is this:
You know people: who are
interested. "If you have anj
stake in Salem, it is your
duty as well as the Slogan
editor's duty to get these
papers into hands where they
will do good ;wili j help build
up the country and the city.
Seeing your duty, do it. Now.
