Negative Arguments to
( Income Tax Repeal Filed
. Opposition to the repeal of the
state Income tax bill is set forth
In negative arguments filed with
the secretary of state by Governor
Walter M. Pierce, C. E. Spence,
state market master, A. Slaughter,
O- U. Ilartwis. George A. Palmln-
ter, master of the Oregon state
grange, and Herbert Egbert, state
president of the Farmers union.
The move to repeal the law is both
unwise and unfair, ft is held.
! "Voters of Oregon are asked to
repeal the present law and oppose
any income tax law in Oregon un
til the other " Pacific states have
finartflrl C 11 o low .tin
- - - V 4 'H H M - Jit n , 113 aigu-
ment sets forth. "But if the vot- '
ers of Oregon were to do so and
the voters of the other Pacific
states were to do likewise, there
never would be an income tax law
in any of the Pacific states."
: . It is pointed out that 15 states
now have an income tax law and
that Iowa,- Nebraska. Minnesota,
Washington, Idaho and Michigan
are contemplating the enactment
of income tax laws. -
LEOPOLD, LOEB FACE
PARENTS OF VICTIM
(Continued from page 1)
carefully laid plans for their
crime."
Twice - during the day did the
state's attorney demand the death
penalty' for the . boys once "in
the name of the parenthood and
the childhood, of the state," in his
opening statement. Again It was
demanded late in the day when
the defense tried to shorten the
testimony and Mr. Crowe said he
for a death sentence.
Defense Itests on Court
- The defense strategy was almost
cryptic. There was but a brief re
sponse to the lengthy statement pf
Mr. Crowe. It was in conversa
tional pitch, directly to the court. (
and ended with a challenging of
the superlatives of the prosecution.
There was ; virtually ' no" cross-examination
of the state's witnesses.
' At one point in' a brief exchange
between counsel,; Darrow reiter
ated that the defense case rested
"in the judgment, the wisdom and
the mercy of this court," and fre
quently signified, ; with the assent
of his colleague. Ben Bachrach.
his willingness to permit direct
and leading questions of the state
witnesses.
Asked after the session what
would be the action of the de
fense in the event of a death sen
tence". Mr. Darrow said:
"Certainly I will never permit
any man to hang so long as ther
is anything in the world I can d
to save him."
Marriage licenses Issue!
Marriage licenses were issued
yesterday from the county clerk's
office to Alexander Rankin of Al

and to Ira Leighty of "Salem and

MY MARRIAGE PROBLEMS
(Continued from page 4)
.Katie looked at the hat whose
covering she had just ripped.
. "Vot you do mit dot?!' she
asked worriedly, r
"I'll attend to that, Katie," I
returned. It won t take Dut a
minute. Go to bed now and try
to get some sleep." , .
She snatched my hand and
kissed it. r-.
I tink I never sleep asain,
she said mournfully, then she
went slowly out of the room.
That's a good line." Allen
Drake said approvingly, "but I
can't echo it. Mel I tink I like
tb sleep "clock round shoost about
now!"
He grinned 'maliciously at me
as I turned from the desk with
the thimble, needle and black silk
thread I needed for the restora
tion of my - mother-in-law's hat,
and at the grimace, even more at
his atrocious imitation of Katie's
speech.- I wished that I could
substitute his features for the hat.
My father replied quickly be
fore I could speak, though indeed
I had no intention of answering
Mr. Drake's thrust. -
"My dear boy,-1 am though tlesi
in keeping you up so long. I have
forgotten that you are but a few
days convalescent. The rest of
this certainly can wait until to
morrow." "All but one- thing. I grant
you." Mr. Drake returned.
"And that is?" my father asked.
"The restoration of this hat. I
lhink. we should form a second
line of defence behind Mrs. Gra
ham when she returns it. for if its
owner should discover "
Upon the door which we had
locked behind Katie sounded a
peremptory tattoo.
