Grass Fire Calls Department At Silverton Sunday Morning SILVERTON, Or., July; 31. (Special to The Statesman.) 3 Smoke from a small grass' fire east of Silverton yesterday fore noon so alarmed a nearby resident that a call for the fire department was put in. The men responded at once but found that the run was made in vain as the fire was practically out at the time they got there. Only a small patch of short grass by the side of the road was burned. . " 6-ine8tf Government is Experiment- ; mg to Find Remedy tor blister ; r The TJ. S. government has had a crew of men in Marion county for the; past month eradicating cultivated black . currant bushes This is; a measure taken for the prevention of trie introduction of white pine blister rust; into the state. Similar work was done in the counties I to the north and west last summer and the work is to be continued In the other coun ties west of the Cascades as rap idly as possible. 4 This very destructive disease' Is costing I the New England states thousands of dollars each year in control.! It was ' Introduced into the west about 1910 and at pres ent is firmly .established and doing enormoiis damage to white pine in British Columbia. It has been found ab far south as Ilwaco, just across the mouth of the Columbia river from Oregon. j All currants and gooseberries are subject to! this disease but the cultivated black currant is very pernicious in j this respect as it takes the disease from the spores' of diseased pines as much as 150 miles away. (This is not true of ether currants or-the gooseber ries, i The, disease does not pass from pine to pine. In regions where the disease be comes prevalent and where it is desired ito. raise white pines com mercially, local control measures are In force and in this case all currants and gooseberries are re moved Jn the' immediate vicinity of the pine area: The disease not being present in Oregon', the best measure! that j can be enforced to prevent I its , entrance , 'and rapid snread is the! eradication of the most susceptible host, the culti vated black currant. . The work of eradication is practically; complete in Marion county. About 1100 bushes have been removed. The crew of men doing this work have met with the: heartiest: coopera tion. ? 1 - i :' -" - , Jm Follette Men Meet SEATTLE; July 21.- Local La Fofiette-rfor-prt?sident adherents announced today that a state con ference of followers would be held here August 11 to arrange plans for a etate; campaign.
