' lL "VV'hile in a canoe with his wife Kenneth Graham ;of the Marion apartments hard a small boy on the opposite bank calling for help. At first he thought the youngster was merely seeking to divert his attention. Though the river was extremely rapid at this J point, Graham decided to make the at tempt to cross to the other side. There he found a boy, about 11 years old, floating face down in the water. He dragged the youngster to the shore and in a short time had him reviyed. The lad failed to give his name, and apparently was little the j worse for his narrow escape though badr ly frightened. Upon ,: learning that he had gone into the river and had stepped into a deep hole and was unable to swim, Gra ham give him a.r severe lecture upon this practice, and urged him to confine his cpoling off pro cesses at the playground or some where where older persons were around. ? - j Petitions Allowed for Pi; Union High District I 'm". .. . j Petitions for the organization of a union high school district for the north end of the ' county were allowed at a meeting of 'the Mar lon county boundary board yester day... j ( Districts included in the union district are Woodbprh, Belle Passf, Donald, White, Hubbard, Hall, Union and the Marion coun ty portions of Aurora and Butte ville.; . The; hearing'; of te monstances will be held at the court house at 10 o'clock Wednes day, July 30. Notices, are now being posted calling attention to the meeting. :: If one remonstrance is' filed the union district will have to be set tled at an election in each of the districts Involved, but if there are no remonstrances, the new district will be. allowed,: Mrs. Mary L. Fulkerson, county school super intendent, said Thursday. ; An election is almost certain, for it is expected that at least one remonstrance will be filed. Wood- burn and Hubbard, which already have high schools, will be required to vote upon the new. district whether any remonstrances are filed, or not; If the organization is approved, the new school would be located at Woodburn.- If Wood- burn or Hubbard fail to vote in favor of the proposed district it is automatically lost. HAD ROADS IXCRKASE COST i On the other hand- in states where the roads are so bad that the' cars Tiad to stand Idle fre quently, the oper a t i n g cost amounted to 8,.t cents'. Thia is despite the fact that the initial cost of cars on the Pacific"" Coast Is slightly higher. On the 4.204, 719 miles traveled by his sales men, during the year, Mr. Thomp son j figures the 'difference- of 2.3 cents between good and bad roads states would amount to $96,708. 54. ! Although the buy- , ers as yet have no definite an- nouncements of what their firms; will buy, many have declared that u the purchase of Jarge lots Is un der consideration. John Young, "Of. the ' firm of -Young" & Wells, who Is here buy ing black cherries, says that he is giving attention to a proposition of returning later In the season and entering the market for green prunes. - - v. . It. It. Hurst, of Denny & Co., " reports that the matter has been brought before the Denny peopio end that it Is receiving favorable consideration. Last year his firm shipped over 1500 cars of green prunes and the amount this year, he declares, may be larger. ; The 'Oregon; Growers' assocla- tion is also reported 'to be inter-? -ested In the green prune market . snd may take up the matter with; view of unloading sorrfe off the market. The movement toward the Iran- : . dling of the green fruit" is a par ticularly, fortunate one for the growers the fruit men; Boint out. Growers will be glad to sell their prunes in the green shape, ; and the sale of green fruit will lessen ' . the "amount of the ripe fruit on the market later in the season, with the almost certain restflt that the later market will be stronger than usual. i' ; , $75,000 Is Paid Growers Of Black Cherries Here A total of $75,000 has been paid to growers of black cherries by the buyers for fresh fruit ship ments alone, according to an esti mate of John Young of the , firm ' of Young & Wells of Spokane, young has been in this district for some time buying the fruit, and is thoroughly familiar with the fherry situation. The success "of the 1924 black dherry season is without parallel, h . here. The above estimate is in addition to the fruit that has gone to the local canneries. 'There is every indication that Sem will become thf cenfer of the black cherry market. Yesterday saw the 33rd car ol brack cherriea leave Salem for: ' . the east.' Young & Wells sent out their 16th. car today; Denney Co.: were working on their 13th car; - the iRjfan Fruit company have sent out two; Poster Butner. buyer from Roseburg, has sent one and the black cherry pool turned over its first: -full car for ship- ment. JJp to and including yes terday 28 tars had been Iced and shipped from the CapitaU Ice & Storage company where the cars are handled-for-Mcing. It is now estimated .that fully 50 cars of black cherries will-leave here this . year for eastern shipment. Every one of the cars is moving by fast -express, going principally to Kan- .. sas City, St. Paul, Chicago, Phila- .. delphia and New York. ., John Young stated that the peak of cherry deliveries was reached yesterday and from; now on will continue to dwindle down,' witlu.the season probably closing next- week,-Thursday or Friday.
