This Is shown In the Pacific Coast sec tion of the national monthly build ing survey' of: S. W. Straus & Co. Although, of the 78 cities, in cluded in this survey. , 31 show gains over April, among them 'be ing San Francisco, Seattle and Long Beach, the Pacific Coast, -as a whole, shows a reduction of 8 per cent from the April total, a reduction of 17 per cent from the total of last May, but a gain of 19 per cent over the , figures of May of 1922. The total for the 78 cities for May is S39,706,44S. L Seattle,- reporting -$4-,758,170 for May, shows a gain of 154, per cent .'over last, May, 104 per cent over April and 190 per cent over May of 1922. The past "month total is the greatest id the history of Seattle with one exception, that of last Junewhen , the .total reached $5,20,445. Of the ten Washington cities included In the survey 'Aberdeen, Bellingham and Tacoma also show gains over April and over last May. . San Francisco,- with a May total of $5,478,111, reports a gain of 11 per cent over last May, 8 per cent over .April and -25 per cent over May of J?,22.f The 14 muni cipalities of the San Francisco bay metropolitan area report 9, 910,321 for May-which is a 7 per cent gain over Last May,' 2 per cent over April and -19 per cent over May of 1922. i r Los; Angeles issued . $ 8,7 8 9,9 32 in . building permits during May, 53 per cent less than the May total of last year, 6 per cent less than for the previous May and 33 per cent less than for April of this year. In .the Los Angeles metro politan area, 13 municipalities re port & total of U2,404,812 for May, 46 per. cent under the fig ures. of last .May, 30 per cent Un der. April of this year, but '5 per Ocent over May of 1922. California, as a whole, 56 cities reporting, shows a May total of $29,314,064, which is 27 per cent under the; record of tbese cities for May, 1923, 12 per cent under that of April,-but 10 per cent over May, 192.2. In .the years past, the manufac turer has not made enough money to permit him to bring his plants up to date, but it is a sign of great encouragement in the indus try that profits are. now being put back into plants.
