Published by Henry Altemus company, Philadelphia; Price $1.50. Oh. the joy of my one small girl as she turned page after page of this delicious story of the Fiddling bear in Askansaw and his adven tures! ; Maybe she enjoyed it more because she was from. Arkansaw ( by birth, not choice) but . the flavor - was rampant as she read Its swinging pages. Here the bear sings his way out of jail and there he charms with a lullaby fiddling tune. And the tune throughout is the - famous i Arksansaw Traveler with rare variations adapted espe daily for fiddling bears ! Your child will love it as mine. And I am sure you will,, too, as much as I did. It stands reread ing, and the pages and chapters each begun with a wordy variation of the same fiddling tune, bring happiness in their wake. It Is book of eternal joy, for it swings with the spirit of lilting rhythm THE PATER RABBIT STORY BOOK, being an assembled group of the numerous!. Peter Rabbit short stories, which this company has published from time to time in the wee book series. Here you have Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail and Peter, and their adventures everything from, holidays to witches, and L from fishing , to prosaic schooldays. It seems" to have no author. The Peter Rab bit tales like Topsy of old evident ly "jes growed." But. there- they are in a big fat book which the children love,; beautifully Illus trated and a joy for all. ; " I must speak a work collective ly for these books, which I have hastily reviewed. In my absence In the east a group of books have accumulated, which in .hasty, re view I cannot do justice to each separate review for its face value. Yet. the- books are all enjoyed. The children's books are all passed on by my most capable critic assis tant, Mary Jule, aged eight. She it is who tells me of the merits or otherwise. And she adores ."The Arkansaw Bear." My baby, aged three, is wallowing in the pages of "Peter Rabbit," which we must read to her 'ere peace is reached The Tipi tales are well told and Interesting from the added value of educational reading along with holding the child's interest. There is such a' fine class of children's books offered today by various publishers. Next week I Twill re view another group. But you may safely purchase and read to the whole family any of the books submitted. There are none which will not pass the muster of de cency. There are no sex novels. There are books of adventure, and young girls' literature both in cov ers of varied interest. But the group is wholly safe to recom mend. May you" enjoy any of these books as I, with my-small girls, have enjoyed them. A conservative is one who fights to maintain an advanced position won by the progressive he sp bit terly condemned yesterday. -Y Kiwanians and Lions to Cross Bats Monday Night National, league dope means but little in Salem at present as the Lions and Kiwanls clubs are get ting ready to - cross bats Monday night.!
