These average" people who I know are getting on; they are not slipping back. They are a long way from perfect, but , they are not at the mercy of the subconscious.. 1 From novels and reviews I would gather that churches are comically inadequate gestures. worn-out - traditions now handed down by intellectual weaklings. Readers ot our . literature a hun dred years from now can come to no other conclusion. Is that true? Take Salem, where I have lived for ten years. Salem is a city of about twenty thousand people, and of this number I have a speak ing acquaintance with six hundred or more. As I go over the list in my mind this , way and that, at random, I can think of only one family who are not members of any church. They were Boston Unitarians . and are among my dearest friends here, it happens. Go - into the canneries, mills, grange meetings, offices of pro fessional men and women, stores, manufacturing., plants, and there you see the same people that you see in the churches on Sunday. ' I know many state officials, su preme court udges, city officials. CURE FOR CONCEIT (By E. W. Howe) We pretty generally believe that men of our time are more intelli gent, than the ancients, and that we have made great progress in our thinking. Recently a book was printed to deny this. The author, James J. Walsh, has the following titles: M. D., L. L. D., Ph. D., Litt. D., Sc. D., and K. C. St. G. This learned man declares that while In housing, getting about, in producing our food, we have taken advantage of : experience, other wise man i3 as he was at the be ginning, as a tree is still a tree, a dog still a dog, and a pig still a pig. Indeed, man . is about the mo3t original and natural thing left: i We have . improved trees, dogs and pigs, but man is about as he was originally. The popu lar Idea ; of progress is that we can measure human advance al most from-decade to -decade. As a matter of fact. Dr. Walsh, says. In the great expressions of human intelligence we are behind, not ahead, of, the past. The ordinary idea of modern progress, as rep resenting a great advance in our time over what was accomplished by preceding generations, is en tirely without justification In his tory. Human nature has not changed, and to read a classic, no matter how old It may be, is like reading a commentary in today's newspaper. Men have often faced the special problems of humanity we are occupied with now, and whenever they . have taken them 1 Forty New . Members To .Welcome Sermon: "The Fellowship of The Saints. Every one said the same thing, if you want to get anything done go to Rev. Mr. Long,, he is the one who can put things through. (Presbyterian.) Attend the meetings of the city council, chamber of " commerce, school board, park board, associ ated charities, federated clubs, there are the church people and the churches are the city. Next to my home on the north are as good neighbors as one could have Roman Catholic. The man of the family is in the .insurance business and - only a . short time ago added "ex" to the title of postmaster that . he had held for years. On the . other side, the same as to neighbors but very ac tive members of the First Chris tian church, the man a nose and throat specialist. The same thing all about us. 5 " : - What kind of a national litera ture fs it that ignores these facts? They can be verified easily and a thousand lights ar$d shadows thrown upon them to make the backbone of a truly American rjfrrel. Specialists 'In 'arts and fences come from these people, rat seldom a criminal. Of the six dearest friends I have in the 'world, ' a Catholic stands first, i And I am a Metho dist and a poet! I can see .you e mile, , but it is no broader than mine. . The Literary Review. seriously, in any period -of human history,, they have solved them-as well aa at any other period,- even our own., The problems of . edu cation that we are' most interested in discussing at the present time are all old. Much more of our science was anticipated longer ago than we care to admit, until the actual evidence Is presented to us. Many supposedly new :advances in medicine are really quite old. What is true of science is also true as regards social problems. It is easy to illustrate that the sociol ogical questions of our age have oiten ;ome up for solution before, and that some of those solutions are well worth studying for the sake of the light they throw on dark phases of present-day prob lems. In the historical period men have always been just what they are at: present In their interests, their ways of looking at things, their power of expression, and their philosophic views of life. The assumption of ; inevitable progress supposed to be traceable from century, to century, if Jnot actually from generation to gener ation, is entirely without confir mation in actual ' history. There are cycles of achievement, and ups and downs in human accom plishment, but we are far from being as a, great as we boast; modernism .is only one of our amiable self-delusions. I am conceited as to the accom plishments of men of my race, if not of my own, and confess this declaration of Dr., Walsh, with that long string of . titles, stagger ed me. I had , supposed all men First Baptist Church REV. E. H. SHANKS SUNDAY MOTINING, agreed that we are progressing. Why have we been unable to prog ress in our social lives as we have progressed in transportation? Peace, kindness, mutual help, fairness, politeness, pay larger dividends than flying machines or radios. Dr. Walsh has hit my conceit a hard blow, although I beleve he has. for some purpose of his own, given modern man a little the worst of it. , ? German Trigamist Preferred Jail to Any of His Wives !
