The shop Is located where the Model barber shop was formerly and the new na me is the Model Beauty parlors. Nine ex perienced operators are kept al most continually busy by the great influx of trade which is due, largely to the increased popularity of bobbed hair. The shop is equipped with all the latest ap pliances and uses the new violet ray for scalp and facial work. The two barbers were formerly men's barbers of long experience. Monday Special . Ice Cream Machine Installed Installation of a brick cutting machine to eliminate work former ly done by hand has been complet ed at the Buttercup Ice Cream company's plant, according to an announcement made by P. M. Gregory, manager. The machine. which cost $500, will take the place of hand cutting methods for merly used. Orchards Not Damaged Though snow covered a portion of the ground in the valley Sat urday morning, and which was heavier in the highland sections, there was no damage done to the orchards which has begun to blos som, according" to reports received in the city yesterday. MOORES In this city, Saturday morning, March 29, 246 South Cottage street, Wylie A. Moores, native of Salem, age 62 years brother of Ross E. and Carroll L. Moores. Mr. Moores was city recorder of Salem from 1905 to 1911, also formerly served as secretary of the state fair board, clerk of the Salem school board, and also as clerk ot the Woodmen of the World lodge here, of which he was a mem ber. Was a member of Portland lodge N. 142. B. P. O. Elks Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 30, at 11 a. m from the Rlgdon mortuary, un der the auspices of Salem lodge of Elks. . Diphtheria Is Increasing- Diphtheria is leading in the number of cases of contagious dis eases to be reported at the office of Dr. William B. Mott, city health officer, during the week ending March 29. Of the nine cases re ported six were of diphtheria and one each of measles, scarlet fever and erysipelas. Sold Minors Cigarettes- Selling cigarettes to minors is knocking the profits off the trans action, it was learned Saturday by Gus Polalis, 546 State, who was fined $10 by Marten Poulsen, po lice judge. Polalis was arrested by Officer White. John Irons 832 North Seventeenth, was ar rested for having cigarettes in his possession. Irons, who is a minor did not appear in the police court yesterday. E. Anderson of route 9. The woman, who gave the name of Mrs. Staley, was not seriously injured, according to the report. Robert Harper, M.D., will speak at the First Baptist church here at 11 o'clock this morning and at Corvallis tonight upon work being done among the Shans Burma. Dr. Harper is a mis- ionary of the American Baptist Foreign Mission society. During his years in Burma Dr. Harper served in four of the five stations which northern Baptists have pened among the Shans. For several years before he came home n furlough he worked at Namk- han, a frontier station only two miles from the Chinese border. Holmes Case Slated Continuation of the hearing of Quentin Holmes of Mt. Angel, charged with being the father of an unborn child, has been slated for the coming week in the justice court. The preliminary work got well under way two weeks ago. but with circuit court coming on neither Lyle J. Page, deputy dis trict attorney who is prosecuting, nor Attorney W. C.
