Inspection Date Changed
Change of dates of the annual
inspection of Company F., 162nd.
Infantry from April 3 to April 17
was announced Saturday by Cap
tain Paul Hendricks Colonel Wil
ley, of Vancouver barracks, Wash,

event is the most important one
of the year for the local unit. Ow
ing to the removal ot Sergeants

That the date of beginning the
building of the" new Elks temple
in Salem is near as indicated by
the announcement that plans for
the building will be presented at
the regular meeting of tjie lodge
next Thursday night. Architect

derstood the lodge will decide on
the olans to be accepted. This
will open the way for building to
start at once.

the chamber of commerce from
United States Senator Charles L.
McNary that after a conference be
tween the senator and Director
Jones, of the bureau of labor, it
was decided to continue the fede
ral employment bureau service in
Salem. The telegram from Sena
tor McNary said: "Director Jones-
today advised he felt confident
he could arrange to continue em
ployment office ' at Salem. Am
sure government will continue to
cooperate as results obtained hare
been splendid. Glad to have been
of this service, as 1 know of help

Street Car, Anto Collide
One woman was injured and
several others escaped in a head
on collision between a street car
and an automobile" driven by El
vin Buerre at Chemexeta and Cot
tage about 9:30 o'clock Saturday
morning. Mrs. Margaret Meggers
945 Union, an aunt of the young
man, received scalp wounds and a
sprained wrist. Mr. Buerre re
ceived a few minor cuts while two
of Mrs. Megger's grandchildren
were not Injured. Slippery pave
ment and rain on the windshield
were blamed for the accident. The
automobile was badly damaged.

day on a trip that may take them
as far north as Vancouver, B. C

Two Deaths From Diphtheria
Though the last week saw a de
cline in the number of contagious
disease cases reported to Dr. Wil
liam B. Mott, city health officer,
there was an increase in the num
ber of diphtheria cases, two ot
which proved fatal. Eighteen cases
were reported during the week and
were as follows: Measles, 9; diph
theria, 7, and one each of chicken-
pox and scarlet fever.

Will Discuss Auditorium-
Included in matters to be dis
cussed at the next meeting of the
Salem Federation of Clubs Friday
is that of a community or muni
cipal auditorium. The discussion
will center around the advisability
of such a building. Whether or
not the federation will take a
stajid on the elimination of sign
boards from the public highways
will also have a prominent part of
the meeting. It is expected there
will be a debate regarding the lo
cation of the proposed children's
wading pool offered by the Kiwa

Congo Missionaries Here
Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Moon re
turned missionaries from the Con
go district in Africa, are spending
the week-end in Salem. Mr. Moon
will speak at the Court Street
Christian church at 11 o'clock this
morning and at the First Christian
church for the night services. The
missionaries have a number of
curios and exhibits with them and
will display these at both services.

University of Meiji, Japan, mix

Bearcats will start spring training
after the vacation period is over,

Pet Shows Are Held
Everything in the line of pets,
from white mice to old Dobbin,
were proudly exhibited by boys of
Jefferson and Hubbard who staged
two pet shows during the week,
according to Edwin Socolofsky,
secretary" of the Marion county
YMCA. Ribbons were given as
prizes. Two bird house contests
are now being conducted, the one
by the Salem Pioneers, ending
April 15, and the one by the coun
ty pioneers ending April 30. All
the boys are evincing considerable

Russell Beckett, who lost his
suit for damages against the Wil
lamette Valley Transfer company,
yesterday filed a motion for a new
trial.

Carl F. Giese, manager of the
