NIGHT LIGHT RECOMMENDED
Smith & Watkins, local auto accessory dealers are
now the agents for Nite-light. The Nite-Iight is mount
ed on the- front of any make of car and controlled by
the steering apparatus. It is very strongly recommend
ed by Portland people. From top down the pictures
above are: Chief Holdon of the Portland fire depart
ment, Captain Fred West in charge of the traffic de
partment, Mayor Baker's car and a Portland delivery
car all equipped with Nitc-lite. hTese lights have been
found especially good for driving in the fog, as they
are set low.
censes also shows a gain.
During the year 1923 a total of
1,066.000 licenses were granted,
an increase of 132,692 over 1922.
it was necessary that the metal
parts Sn order to retain their pris
tine luster be polished every time
the car was washed, but now mot
orists may preserve the polished
surface bv coating it with thin
film of Izen, a preservative made
solely for that purpose.

Its Usefulness
Is Unequaled
The good Maxwell Club Sedan is 100 per cent
useful because it is staunchly, sturdily built to
stand hard knocks with never a hint of the
makeshift anywhere about it.
And. furthermore, its usefulness is unexcelled
because of its original body design. Come in
and see for yourself how clear the passageway is
into and out of the car and how readily you
can load the tonneau with packages or bulky
articles. The Club Sedan is built for utility first,
last and all the time.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST
RELIES ON TRUCKS
r
The lumber output of the Pacific
coast last year was approximately
300.000,000 feet. The vast quanti
ties of logs and lumber are moved
by rail but as the cut is pushed
back further and farther, leaving
small Elands inaccessible to rail
roads, the truck comes Into its
own. It is said that more logs
and lumber are hauled on trucks
in the Pacific Northwest than any
other form of motor transport
The service is particularly severe
The trucks work deep in the woods
often having to make their own
trails.. A number of the lumber
companies maintain private roads
in order to facilitate truck move
ments. Some of the hauls are 20
miles long. Often very steep
grades are encountered and as tha
season is short and operators are
paid on the basis of quantity, they
subject their equipment to every
thing it will stand. During the
course of the season some of the
trucks are operated exclusively in
hauling logs but others haul logs
to the mill and then the cut lum
ber from the mills to the nearest
railroad. It is common practice
for some of the trucks, that have a
20 mile haul to make two round-
trips daily.
DENVER RANKER COMMENTS
"The benefits resulting from
the use of the automobile in tht
west can hardly be fully appraised
One of our leading industries, that
of rattle and shaep raising, is of
necessity carried on in isolated
sections. The western farmer, un
like his eafctern competitor. i3 far
from a source of supplies, far from
a market, and far from congenial
companionship and amusement.
"The automobile has practically
destroyed this inequality. Today

tically the same social and eco
nomic advantages as the city

"The credit for these bene'its
te due to 'he automobile. It has
brought the farmer nearer to mar
ket, making .hlm a more intelligent
producer and a more successful
business man. Its larger use has
been reflected in a more satisfac
tory 7 rural life and more rapid
farming development." '

Quantity Production
Gives Big Value
'J'HE BUICK is produced by the world's largest manufacturer
of high-grade automobiles.
Last year ten companies made over 90 per cent of the auto
mobiles, five made 8 1 per cent and two made over 68 per cent
One of these is the General Motors,, manufacturers of Buick cars.
More than 200,000 Buicks were made in 1 923. That means a
quantity production that permits manufacture and distribution
at the very lowest cost, quality considered.
It also means a system of nation-wide service that gives the
Buick owner the necessary attention after he buys his car.
It means that you are not going to be the owner of an "orphan
car one where the manufacturers have gone out of business and
repairs or replacements are not available.
Buick has been awarded first place at the
New York Auto Show for the 6th consecutive year.
Conclusive proof that Buick Is the World's
largest producer of high grade automobiles.
The Buick owner has a confidence, a pride of ownership and a
feeling of satisfaction out of all proportion to the cost of his car.
Friends do not look pityingly at him as if they doubted his
automobile judgment or condole with him on the trouble he has
in store.
Instead, they smile their approval and say:
"Well, I see you have used good judgment in selecting a
