gon at the present time, especially
in eastern Oregon, is serious, ac
cording to Rhea Luper, state en
gineer. The Malheur river.' says
Mr. Luper, is yielding only 40
second feet for irrigationists. and

Divorce proceedings instigated
by Alta E. Wood against Thomas
Wood have been transferred
from Multnomah county and will
be heard in the Marion county
court. The change of venue was
granted upon motion of the hus
band, who is a resident of this
county. The couple were married
here in 1919. Mrs. Wood charges
cruelty, continual nagging and era
barrassment. She requests the"
restoration of her maiden name,
Alta E. Johnson. This-is denied
in an affidavit issued by the hus
band, who. charges that she left
him in June, 1923, and put in too
much time studying music and
dancing at night. She was seldom
home, he says, and for some time
was employed in the office of the
state insurance commissioner here
while he Was employed by the
Standard Oil company in Portland.
He also charges that she was out
with other men. A rebuttal issued
by the wife denies these allegations.

Coast Has Building Boom
That building is prevalent along
the entire Paciric coast from Van
couver B.C., to Los Angeles, was
the statement made by Albert Cop
ley, who speke at the Marion-
Polk County Realty association
luncheon 'ThuTSday noon on "Ob
servations 'Regarding Conditions
in California." The predicted
slump in California building acti
vities has not materialized, he
said, and building is general and
has been for-a, great many years'.
Inasmuch as California is Oregon's
nearest neighbor and both have
much in Common, Mr. Copley said
that a boost for one is a boost for
the other. At present there is
more talk in California about Ore
gon's rood roads than ffrer before
and that the'great amount of pave
ment is a fine advertisement. He
stressed the importance of the
variety of fruits grown, though
the walnuts cannot compare with
those grown in Oregon.

Salesman May Recover
Ralph Hacon of Salem, traveling
salesman who was thrown from
his coupe at Talbot when struck
by an Oregon Electric train, has
an even chance to recover, accord
ing to word received here yester
day from Albany, where he is in
hospital. Physicians said that
Thursday he was able to recognize
his mother. He was thrown SO
feet from the track by the force
of the impact and received two
skull fractures and a pierced lung.

land, candidate for the office of
United States senator, will , speak
to the 'Salem Lions club at the
regular luncheon today. He has
been asked to speak upon some
phase of boosting Oregon. Otto
Hoppes will preside as chairman

consented to speak, though the
invitation was only issued yester
day when F. G'. Deckebach, of the
Marion creamery, reported to the
committee that he would be un
able to speak Friday. He was to
have discussed the value of the
dairy industry to the Willamette
valley.

occupied in the justice court yes
terday obtaining testimony from
Alta Brenden, of the Evans val-
lev district, near Silverton, com
plaining witness against Quentin
Holmes of Mt. Angel, who, she
charges, is the father of her un
born child. Only two other wit
nesses were called by Lyle J. Page,
deputy district attorney, who pros
ecuted the case. These were Wal
ter Motchberger and Ida Brenden,
an older sister. The four often
took automobile rides, the three
witnesses said. Owing to inabil
