OREGON STATE NEWS Demanding More of Students EUGENE, Feb. 9. For failure to make passing grades in at least nine hours last term, 82 students of the University of Oregon have been placed on piobation for the present terms it was announced at the university. In order to be come reinstated these students must make a total of 17 hours by the end of the term. Of the number placed on proba tion 68 are men and 14 women The preponderance of men on the list is due, it was stated, to the fact that men as a rule " follow more vocational lines of work than do women and the studies chosen are more difficult. A general Improvement is shown in scholarship, the statement said by virtue of the fact that at the fall term last year more than 100 students were placed on probation and the enrollment at that time was less than it la nox. Thirty-three student- vere per. nianently dropped at I he end c the fall term just coehu!ed which is also a smaller number than the ear previous. . Broccoli Prospects fkol ROSEBURG. Feb. 9. Accord ing' to Foster Butner. manager of the Umpqua Valley .Broccoli Ex change, markets for Umpqua val ley broccoli show good indications for the season, which is expected to open about the 20th of this month. Mr. Butner states that only a few cases of the product are being shipped at present and that most shipments of this is go inc to Portland markets. No car load shipments are expected until later in the month, when the ship ping to eastern markets and Can ada will start. The present weather conditions are very conducive to the growtn of the broccoli and will probably affect an early opening of the markets. California broccoli is selling rapidly and it is expected that most of the produce from that state will be off the market wlren the Oregon producers open their season. Prices are holding steadily so far in the year and local sales are being made at $l.o0 per crate, f. o. b. Roseburf.' Full Time Fnit'for Douglas ROSEBURG, Feb. 9. -The full time county health work was. tak- 325 HB233Ji-TXl THE TARIFF REATTACHED By JOB f. ADAMS. Chairman of the Republican National Committee The a ri ii o u n cement of Democratic leaders in Congress of their inten tion to inaug urate an at tack on the protective tar iff law will not meet with the approval of thou ghtfuJ Americans. The present tarilT is dem onstrating daily the wisdom of its enactment. As a revenue act it easily ex cels any tariff law ever In effect It produces between $550,000,000 and S600.000.000 annually. At this time, when the subject of taxes Is uppermost in public discussion, it should be kept in mind that every dollar of federal revenue collected at the customhouses means one less dollar collected in income tax. The present protective tariff has stimulated foreign trade. Our exports for the calendar year 1923 were $333,000,000 greater than for the year 1922. and over 21,680.000. 000 greater than 1913. a normal pre-war year. In 1923 our imports were the greatest of, any year in history more than double Im ports In pre-war periods. The sig nificance of these figures is In the fact that we operated under the Fordney-McCumber tariff all the year of 1923. v t What the agricultural and live T a mi iji rwrrmm-m L,V', C&CJl mterefltaofthfleonntrT'ej CQratry atM, yorljl-, en up officially this morning with the arrival of Mrs. Glen Post who is to assist Mrs. Florence G randy who has been here for some time ' starting off the work of the county health unit. These two nurses ar to remain here permanently and will spend their full time in this county in the public health work. Dr. Belt of Newport, who Is to complete the unit, is expected to arrive today. This physician will also give his full ; time to this county. Mrs. Grandy reports that in the inspection which she has made so far she finds that there Is , number of contagions through- out the county, including some ... cases of scarlet . fever, whooping cough, measles and other diseases. New . reports are, coming in dally from various sections of the coun-; ty and no time will he wasted In starting the health work. To Form Johnson Club EUGENE, Feb. ; 4. Organiza tion of a Johnson for President club- will soon be under way ia Eugene, according to the report of Sanfield McDonald of Portland,, state organizer for the California senator, who , was here yesterday on his way south in the interests of the candidate. A county chair- man will be named and the nuc leus of a club will be formed in the near future, according to ar rangements that were made here, Mr. McDonald states. Senator Hiram Johnson will be a Eugene visitor In JApril or May prior to the Oregon primary May 16, according to Mr. McDonald. The senator will have completed his eastern campaign at that time and will make five or six speeches in Oregon, , Says Rhodes to Blame ALBANY.' Feb. 4. If Ell Rhodes of Salem suffered damages in the wreck of May 25. 1923. when his automobile and the Ap person sedan driven by F. E. Cal liater of this city collided at the intersection of the Sllverton-Che-' mawa road and the Pacific high way six miles north of Salem. It was the result of his contributory negligence, according to the ans wer tiled today by Mr. Callister through his attorney. K. L. Mc Dougal of Portland. . . - Rhodes is suing Callister for $7,800 damages, claiming; that the accider-t was the result of Call is- ter's carelessnes.s " ' In the answer to the complaint. : Mr. Callister's attorney ,sets out the claim that Rhodes approached i he intersection "operating his au tomobile recklessly," and careless- ; y and negligently failed to ob srrve the traffic on the 1 Paclf if hightray. which he .was approach' ing. . ' ;" :'-- , LonbeiTles in Unn ' ALBANY, Feb. 7. Details per taining to the production and the marketing of Oregon fruits were given to a meeting of loganberry growers who gathered at the com munity house this afternoon,: by C. L. Long, fruit specialise and C J. Hurd, marketing specialist, both of the O. A. C. Mr. Long said la opening that all fruits are competing with the loganberries for a place on "the market. Out of the 740 million bushels of fruit needed in ' the United States, this country grows but 97.5 per cent. .Which situa tion he pointed out. requires that we create a market by advertising. ; What Oregon should strive to do is to put up a uniform -quantity pack. He also championed co-operative organizations A or the rea son that such organizations take all the product . raised, while the , private buyers only take what can be disposed of. think of the present tariff Is evi denced by their general protests against any lowering of present, schedules affecting their prod ucts. To" tle contrary, there U a demand that the present rates on agricultural products be ' In creased under the flexible provi sions of the Fordney-McCumbei act. .: . ' ".-.-' There Is no merit In the argr -ment that the present tariff has increased the cost of living. Out manufacturers sell to jobbers and . wholesalers. If the tariff had en abled them to raise their; prices as Democrats charge, the fact would be Immediately reflected in wholesale priees. The Janu ary report of the U. 8. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the average wholesale priees of over 400 standard eemmoditles. repre senting all industries, declined during the year 1923. Under the Fordney-MeCumber, act. during the last 15 months, the United States has witnessed a period of unparalleled indus trial activity and prosperity. Nev er in the history of the United States during peace times have, so many wage earners been em-; ployed or the level of wsges been; as high In industry as since the Fordney-McCumber act became: effective: It will be very difficult to convince the industrial wage, earner or the agricultural pre-! ducer that the protective tariff! now in effect should be reduced! or repealed. It has bronght all; classes of citizens and ell sections of the country better times and insured all lines of activity a staw bility not approached in any Ota- , r, H
