Si ( 1 v I x i i I ..SW J nHJLKl TH STUC- i n c c- STATEMENT RIMS Pastor Tells Why Church Disapproves Coming of ' Billy Sunday The reason' that the official board of the First Christian church did not approve the coming of Billy Sunday to Salem la set forth by Rev. John. J. Evans, pastor of the church, in a statement made public yesterday. He said: : , "In ytew of the many favorable newspaper comments concerning the coming of Billy Sunday to Sa lem In June, I think it worth whilo to state, the reasons for the nega tive vote of the board of the First Christian church.' . t "In common with many. we think the time inopportune. If It were a matter that concerned oar local organization alone, it would not think .of calling a specialist for such a work at that particu lar season of the year, and weean ' see no advantage as it relates to the wider aspect.? ' ' "In the second place, our con vention of churches In Oregon Is ' booked for Turner beginning: July 5 and closing th 13th. The pro posal of Mr. Sundar tor ' suc week campaign would overlap this date and would greatly injure our prospects of a successful conven tlon, for if his influence did not reach as far as Turner he would not do the work expected of him. Our state convention is to our churches what the annual state gatherings are to other commun ions. Our entire year's work throughout the state is Involved, both as to past ; and .. future. ; It is impossible to change the date of the convention as it is a link in a chain of coast state conven tions. We do not feel justified In hindering that gathering.. MIn the third place we do not see our way clear to give the 1 amount of guarantee requested by , Mr, Sunday. The churches are presumed to -underwrite the fol lowing expenses: The cost. of a tabernacle, seating 7500 people, $700 or $800 traveling expenses of the company; their rooms and liv- -ing expenses while in Salem; $2500 for two-thirds ot the salar ies of the company assisting Mr, -Funday.. a total of approximately $10.000 perhaps more. This masl be underwritten by . the churches or indivldaals representing th churches. i?But in any event it . comes from . the churches. 01 course he will endeavor to raise the above amounts during the first few weeks of the meeting. Then following. this he & to have a. free- will offering, and he receives no smalll amounts. ' ? ?J '"Our board. In view of these -facts, feels justified in . giving a . negative vote, and so far it has no disposition to reconsider the matter. Since most of the church es voting in favor of his coming, have not apparently considered the expense items, I feel that it is only right that our position be under stood.". ; - i IN FEW MINUTES When yon are suffering vwith rheumatism so you can hardly get around Just try Red Pepper Rub and you will have the quickest re lief known. - ; ; . -.
