CHAPTER 56
THE SURPRISING FACTS FRED
TOLD MADGE
The Coagrore twins are as alike
in faces, voices, height, weight
all physical characteristics as
the proverbial two peas in a pod.
But there : the resemblance ends.
Temperamentally they are leagues
apart.".; '';-.; . ;
Ted is a harum-scarum, volatile
youth, who, if he were a student
at a co-educational institution, he
would be dubbed a' f usser", from
his first day on the campus. Fred,
on the contrary, is shy, silent, de
voted to his mother, and with
apparently little use for any other
specimens of femininity, no mat
ter how attractive. Ted chatters
all day long, and no one pays any
attention to him. Fred speaks but
rarely, and when he does he has
attentive listeners.
I was much surprised at his
embarrassed announcement; that
there was something he ought to
tell- me concerning the fight be
tween Dicky and the man Smith,
but I knew that it behooved me
to listen carefully and to draw
from him every stired of knowl
edge he possessed on the subject.
"Yes. Fred, what is it!" I
asked encouragingly, as he paused,
looking at me as if for permission
to go on.-. . " ; . ':
He glanced .around furtively.
saw that Bess J)ean was standing
with his father out of earshot, and
then burst into Impulsive'expletiv.
"Sav, that Bess Dean makes me
sick!" He sputtered like a Fourth
of July pin-wheel. . i -
I started with a quick, remorse
ful pre-science of the truth. (
"What?" 1 demanded sharply.
"Because ; she's such a four
flusher." He pronounced this
most drastic judgment of boyhood
emphatically, and paused again.
while I longed to shake his reas
ons out of him. . "
"What Did ' He Do?" I
"Tell ine what you mean, Fred,"
I encouraged. "You must have
some good reason for' saying these
things." :;; V"
"I'll tell the world I have!"" be
declared excitedly. "If she ain't
the limit telling you that Mr.
Graham slammed that Smith be
cause Smith got fresh to her. I
was standin' right, by. and saw
the whole thing, and Smith never
said : one; word to Miss Dean. I
don't think he had time to look at
anybody, for just as soon as your
car was out of sight Mr. Graham
walks up to Smith, kind of on his
toes like, he looked almost as if
he was dancing, slid he oh, boy!
but it was "pretty!"
, lle paused again maddeningly,
and I bit my lips to keep , from
screaming my impatience at him.
Bat I dared only to slip in a quiet
question. w ' ' f -
rwhat did he do?" s .
"Ha bows os polite as if ho were
being. Introduced, and says: 'Mr.
Smith. I believe. " t
"Smith, he looks at him.uglv
like. and tries to push past him.
I guess he was in a powerful hur
ry to rjet away, and he growls out
PROBLEMS
something like: " Yes, what's It to
you?" ' ,. - K )''
" 'It's this' to me,' . says Mr.
Graham. You double-jointed,
knock-kneed, foul-mouthed son of
a sea-cook, you took it on
yourself to make lit very un
pleasant for my wife Just now, and
I waited till she was out of sight
and hearing to give you . yours.
Will you take it standing, or shall
I turn you. over my knee?'
"We Don't Interfere '
"Gee! I never saw anybody
handed out smiling the way Mr.
Graham did, and he was just boil
ing inside anybody could ' see.
that. And ' then. Smith sort of
rushed him, and 1 Mr. Graham
knocked him flat. Then he picked
him up again and took him by the
coat collar and rushed him toward
the. woods. VI. think he meant to
cut a limb and tan him. But Smith
was putting up quite a fight when
they, went out of sight among the
trees." v : .'' , . . , : "
. "And none of you went to help
him!" I cried indignantly. .
,'Fred smiled in superior fashion
at my feminine Ignorance.
"We don't interfere with fights
up here," he said. "Besides, Mr.
Graham could .take care of him
self. He didn't need any help. I
wouldn't have done it, only it
made me Tierce bearing that Bess
Dean shooting off her mouth.. I
think Ted believes her, the darn
fool! He didn't see it all the way
I did. . r-:,
' The subconscious' reason for hiS
rancor spoke in Ills last words. I
know, from their mother and my
own observation, ; that the twins
always have been almost insepar
able comrades. Bess Dean's fasci
nations have so attracted Ted dur
ing her stay at the Cosgrove home
that the foolish lad. In his moth
er's ! parlance, "hasn't known
whether he was standing on his
head or his heels.". And his com
radeship with his brother has suf
fered correspondingly. I saw that
Fred wac actually jealous of the
girl's Influence .over h,is beloved
twin;; s - . : -i --;
- But I had no time for either
speculation or sympathy. All my
heart and mind wevejensroased in
the rapturous, ' kn'owiedge r a
knowledge mingled wittf re?morfce
at my own blindness that Dicky
Jtad fought with thet. man Smith
to avenge me instead of Bess Dean.
