Hiram W. Johnson for the position
vt campaign manager for the Pa
cific northwest. Bruce Dennis,
editor of the La Grande Observer,
member of the state senate and
one of the early Bull Moosers of
the Roosevelt days, has been pro
posed for the place. A message to
tnis effect vras telegraphed to
Sen-.or Johnson yesterday by the
newly elected Johnson state cam
paign committee of Oregon.
The Pacific northwest includes
the states of Oregon, Washington,
Idaho and Montana, and Senator
Dennis is familiar with general
political conditions in all of those
states. lie is an ardent advo
cate of Johnson for the republican
nomination for president, and has
had considerable experience in
managing campaigns for men and
measures.

and intend pushing forward until

campaign in this state, especially
since it lotsks as though Johnson
will he heavily financed this
time, but Macdonald has no in
tention of being pushed aside af
ter his record of 1920.
Mr. Crowder, the vice-chairman
of the committee, i3 to look after
the Johnson interests in the coun
ties" east of the Cascades. Mr.
Crowder is a Methodist minister
at present retired and living at
Salem, but he served in his cleri
cal capacity in eastern Oregon and
knows that country and its people.
Secretary Butler was formerly in
the office of the secretary of
state, was at one time mentioned
as a candidate for that position,
and recently has been in the de
partment of the collector of inter
nal revenue. He is a brother of
Judge R. R Butler of The Dalles.
Of the members of the executive
board, all are Portland lawyers
with the exception of Mr. Dougher
ty, who is interested in Aberdeen
Angus cattle, and the two doctors.
Dr. Walker is senior vice-commander
lor Oregon of the Spanish
War Veterans.

have Johnson's name placed on
the presidential primary ballot by
petition. The form of petition
has been prepared and the peti
tions will be placed in circulation
some time after tho first of the
year.

Harry Tracy personally, in spite
of the fact that Tracy, notorious
desperado, has been dead for the
las.t 20 years. The date was re
cent, and the letter was mailed
from Condon, by a man known
personally by Mr. LJllie. ---? ..

excellent marksmanship, and told
how as a boy of 16, the writer
had run all the way down state
when he learned of the trouble
at the prison. He arrived in time
to see the three murdered guards
carried from the prison to an un
dertaker's wagon. In detail some
of the minute particulars attend
ant upon the circumstances were
related by the writer. A strain
of sympathy was found and occa
sional repetitio nof an invitation
to visit him in Condon "If still
upon the astral plane." The quo
tation was repeated several times.
After reading the letter Mr. Lil
lie sent it to the sheriff, suggest
ing that the writer be investigated
concerning his sanity.

Of Supplies for State
Pricca on food supplies for the
state institutions, bid3 on which
were opened yesterday by the
state board of control, average
about the same as six months ago
when the last previous bids were
opened. The opening of the bids
has not been completed.
Beans have gone up from $5.75
to $G.50 a hundred. Cheese has
dropped from 26 to 25 cents a
pound. Crackers were 10 9-10
cents six months ago and the new
bid i3 10 6-10 cents. Rice has
gone up from $4.70 to $5.95 a
hundred. Six months ago coffee
was bought at 19 1-2 cents and
the new bid is 20 1-4 cents. Beef
has increased from ?7.95 to $9.20
a hundred and mutton from $6.94
to $9.96. Ham is the same at
$20.70 ;i hundred. Bacon is low
er. Six months ago the state paid
$18.90 and the new bid is $15.50.
Lard has dropped from $12 to
$11.10 a hundred and compound
from $11.97 to $10.25. For other
commodities the. figures for six
months aco and now respectively
are: Hard wheat flour, $5. HO
and $1.83: soft wheat flour. $4.35
and $1.45; cream, rolled oats.
and $3.53; corn meal. $2.60
and $2.7S; bran. $23.20 and $24
