THE OREGON STATESMAN, SALEM, OREGON SATURDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 24, 1923 A. S. Dudley of .Portland Gives Booster Talk Be fore Lions Club Oregon's chief problem today Js the 'development of Its latent re sources and the providing of a market for Its products." A. S. Dud ley, executive, of the State Cham ber fOf Commerce, Portland, told members of the Salem Lions' club at their regular luncheon Friday. "More people are needed in the state, . and colonization is a com paratively ; easy , matter t If assur ance can' be given that when pro duce !s raised this can find a cer tain market ' and outlets are pro? Tided"," Mr." Dudley said., ''Classi fied and standardized cooperation throughout the State is necessary, and when this has been developed It will not be a hard problem to sell farm lands. Each additional family attracted to the state tends to reduce taxation.' and . the more families the less taxation anyone will have to pay." . - "It will . take time , to get the program worked out and running smoothly, but the more each com munity works the sooner this will be accomplished." he said, "Take your state seriously and talk about . if In an intelligent and optimistic manner. . Tou.haye ; no peed to feel ashamed of either your com munity or Tour state. " "Cooperation ' consists of con ducting yourself- In such a manner that others find it an easy matter to work with you.. Personal ef fort is necessarv- to develon Salem and Oregon, but by working to gether , in an unselfish" manner, much can 1jq accomplished. "Last year there" were 442 fam ilies traveling by automobile that stayed in Oregon. 'By beautifying the highways - and the cities this number can be exceeded In the fu ture," r : . He urged 'that hospitality and beautiful cities' be shown the stranger from other states and by making him feel . at . home, induce him to return and locate here. Salem, In particular should be de veloped into the most attractive city of the state because, it is the capital city, and . impressions of the state capital often are the im pressions received from the entire state. Uncouth and ' unsightly shacks and weeds at the entrance of any city gives a negative re-, action.- no matter what; may be offered later. . .-That the Chamber of Commerce Is 'the logical organization through which theity finda expression was stated by Mr. Dudley, i who urged that not only this organization. but the State Chamber of Com merce, made up of 37 other cham bers throughout the state, be con sidered Salem's organization. The state chamber . has facilities to work out solutions of . problems confronting Individual chambers. he said in closing. .
