Sparks of Washing ton junior high school returned Saturday from Berkeley, Cal., where he spent the early part of the summer in the famous Uni versity of California summer. ath letic school, y ' '"- He was pne ot the star athletes in Willamette before his gradua tion and. since then has coached both the Salem high school bas ketball team and the Willamette freshmen. He Is teaching science In the school, but athletics has been his hobby, and this YMCA classes - have done some excellent The gymnasium work. His sister, Miss Fay Sparks, also attended the Berkeley summer school with him this year, and has returned to Sa lem with him to re-enter Willam ette In September. Their father, A. H. Sparks, is with them in Sa lem, and he may decide to remain for the winter. His home has been in Bandon, Coos county. At Berkeley Mr. Sparks found a number of old Willamette stud ents, about 25 in all, he reports. Among them was Bryan McKltt rick, star baseball and basketball player, who was graduated a year ago, and hag had a fine teaching position at the Areata, Cal.; high school. . He Is retained ' for an other year. Howard Jewett, pres ident of. the student body and a crack athlete back In 1916, was also there. So was Loren Bass ler, who was graduated two years ago,, and has ' been teaching in the Athena Oregon high school. Prof. J. T.
