LEADING STOCKS HIT LOW LEVELS NEW YORK, July 31. The turn for the" worse In Tresident Harding's condition was general ly regarded as one of the princi ple factors in bringing about a sharp reaction in today's stock markets, which resulted - in the average of 20 leading industrial stocks, including United States Steel common, Baldwin, Altchison, St. Paul Common and Preferred and Missouri, Pacific Common and Preferred also sold at. their lowest prices of the year, the net-losses ranging from 1 to 4 points. Pres ident Harding, personally, is very popular in the financial districts and news of his illness was read with widespread interest and sym pathy. One banker pointed out that, if the president should be incapaci tated for any length of time and was forced to delegate some, of his duties to others, it - would probably result in increased radi cal activities because of the ab sence of authority. It was appar ently this that brought the stocks down by frightened interests dur-- Ins the day. .- WHEAT PREDICTION IS LIGHT RECEIPT Price Averages Higher Tues day With Unsettled Con- ' : dition at Close' I CHICAGO, July 31. Wheat averaged higher in today's market largely as a result of absence of any heavy selling rather of a hedging character. Wi'h no spe cial In today's market wheat it was expected that receipts here arter would be rather light. The close was unsettled ranging from 3-8 net decline to 1-2 cent, ad vance with September .96 5-8c & .96 3-4c; and December $1 & 1-8. Corn finished 3-8c off to a gain of 2 cents Oats varied from 1-8 to 1-4 lower. . Commission buying of wheat was of liberal v lume, but de mand appeared to wane on the re sulting advances in prices. Unfa vorable weather in the northwest with bullish crop reports from both sides of the Canadian line was responsible for much of the buying, and in addition there was a good deal of month-end .evening up of accounts on the part of pre vious sellers. Corn at the last reached a goaf which had long been predicted by bulls .90 cents a bushel for July delivery,- the highest point on the crop. Avail able stocks of Corn are about 20. 000 000 bushels less than last year and oats stocks ,34,000,000 bushels less, j . .....
