the job. "Fine shower baths have been installed for the men. - 1' i 4 A number, ot Salem employes are taking stock in the company in Its great ne w ' customer-ownership plan. ; ; It is considered that PRlOESfAVIHEPElMTTO the Portland company, has put i over one of .the finest "Own-Tou- Own-Utlllties campaigns In the history of ; the ; northwest. It has Power and Light Company ' M - 1 till i now, 14 per cent of all its custom ers on its, books as stock owners. io nave necepuon wnen - Addition Is Completed and they, are coming faster than ever before, jj ' ' puotraLi : I MOST DRASTIC COMPELLING ORDER EVER IMPOSED ON A $25,000 STOCK SI V The Portland Railway, Light & Power company has been planning a public, reception at its new power plant on Mill street ever since, the power house was. finished along in the winter.- Bat -the company -wanted to set the k boiler house built first, so as to show a com plete, absolutely modern power : Installation, and the boiler house isn't , even yet built. The .recep tion still looks to be quite a way in the future. , v-' "1 Old House Based " But It la coming. Most of the old boiler, house has . been i torn down, and the site is being clean ed up.' The ! smaller stack' has been removed the larger one is just ready to bring down, as soon as the 11,00 O-Tolt - line in the old "boflerT room can be . removed and d laced on the east of the new.pow er house. Most oJ the bric'k from the old boiler settings has been removed, and-, the company Is al most ready to go to work on the new boiler house. 1 The original plans called l for the Installation of duplicate bat teries of water-tube boilers, both ' In the same power house. iThe , second - two-boiler unit is far en ough in the? future that the boiler house, as it is to be. built this sea son, will not be large enough for this, second, installation. ;lt - will ; merely enclose 'the first pair of .1500" horsepower boilers, leaving the south' end ; only a temporary i frame closure that will keep the plant in the dry but will be easily removed when the extension is needed. . - ' ':''- ., T ),.' ' , Draught MotoiDriven; j ' ;'a 75-horsepower electric motor Is used' to give, the forced draught for. the smoke In the cinder cone " that has replaced , the tall stacks that used to be the mark, of every great, power-plant., This motor, .with its attached fan. drives the . the smoke cone, where, the cinders are thrown out , by centrifugal - force and slip down the steel, sides of . the cone, to be.- gathered - up . from .the . trap door hopper bqt- iom in roruana, waere mere .is a similar; installation, a series of steel . Tanea has been tried like hurdles on a - race track, to put down inside the cone and obstruct and delay- the smoke current so as to get' better gravity purification as well as a relief from the back draught of the fan. 'It was found so good in Portland, that the' company-has imported a set ot slmilar vanes for the Salem plant which are now ready to install.' In Port land it was found that, the same cinder separation could be effected with the use of one-half the pow er, current, so the company Is an xious, to do as much in Salem. The improvement will be Installed at once.' : , '," ' Plant Is Superb The new plant is one of the1 fin est power installations in the Btate.
