schools. According to Mr. Smith
a copy has been sent tor the com
missioner of naturalization at
Washington, D. C, and Examiner
Tomlinson in charge of the Port
land office for their Inspection
and approval. Mr. Smith states
that the work is 'one of the Aiost
impressive documents of its kind
that was ever sent to his office.

opinion of Attorney General Van
Winkle in rfeply to an inquiry by
he state tax commission-
The relief statu, passed, by the
923 legislature, requires the
state tax commission to certify
to the. secretary of 'state the total
amount of state taxes assessed
and levied against' property in As-'
toria. Then the secretary of state
is required to draw a warrant on
the state treasurer for that
amount, payable to the city of As
toria in a sum equal to one-halt
the certification of the .state tax
cOmihission. .The amount of the
first certification i. will be about
$77,000. .; Inclusion of the school
tax makes a difference of about
$18,000 in Astorias favor.

used as quarters for the nurses.

convenience has been planned for.
When finished, as every one will
agree who saw it yesterday af
ternoon, ithia will be ,one of the
best arranged hospitals In the
United States to accommodate
fifty patients. When the wings
are added, it will be a handsome
