Architect Authorized to Draw
Permanent Specifications
For New Wing
The school board wrestled at
great: length with the high school
addition last night. Then It au
thorized Architect Fred Legge to
prepare permanent plans covering
an addition running south 100
feet from the east end of .the
present building, along Church
street. It will be close to 74 feet
wide,! and three 'stories high, to
exactly match the present build
ing in height and architecture.
It will not be quite on the. line
flush with the east line wall
the present structure,1 but will be
set in a foot or more, to give a
little architectural relief from too
long a straight, unbroken wall.
The new east entrance may be set
out a few feet, to break up. the
monotony1 of a perfectly, straight
Wall. . v )'' : . .
Fourteen Class Rooms ;
The new structure Is o. have 14
class rooms, according to the plan
submitted by Architect Legge.
These will be changed very little,,
save 1 to reduce some of the d I
mensions from the 82 foo width
that had been proposed. The gym
nasium will cover the entire up
per fldor, being about 71j.by 9?
feet in the clear; large enough fpr
two basketball courts for practice,
or for one' big standard-court and
approximately 800 spectators.' A
narrow balcony will be considered,
two rows of seats along either side
which would care for 250 specta
tors" The roof will be trussed,
likelthe armory roof, which is 90
feet in width. '
i Gym Offers Probjemj :
, The board came near disagree
ing on a . gymnasium, and .retain
ing the present Inadequate ,but
nevertheless - usable floor, which
is 61 by 66 feet in size. But fi
nally the new plan was worked
out to a measurable satisfaction
to all, and it will be followea.
The present gym can be , cut .'UP
Into class rooms, to make about
six good rooms. This, with the
nteV addition, will adf 20 clasi
rooms to the present high ; school
equipment, besides the gym prae
tically twice the present slse anq
far better dressing and physical'
education quarters. , j . I
It's going to call for some fafj
work on the nart of the contract
Xotb. to get the new building flnj
ished in time for the fall termUf
I 1 Relief Asked . . I'j
, Mrs.' Parrish, living in' North
Salem, appeared before the, board,
to. ask relief for her son. Homer,
who had-his-leg broken while; oa
the Highland school ground eight
weeks ago: He had Just come out
onto the grounds, at noon, when
larger boys who were playing soc
cer' ran over him, and one fell on
him as he was i shoved over a big
hole' dug for playing marbles. His
leg : was badly j broken, and the
surgeon's .bills n had been close , to
$100 for the' treatment.'nbt count
ing the suffering or the f loss of
school. The board took1 the mat
ter under advisement, and1 will
report at the next meeting. '-.
A: neighborhood ; plan submit
ted by the patrons of the Grant
junior high school district, makes
a decided change from the plans
brought down by Architect Knigh
ton r of Portland. The ( board
wrestled with the suggestions un
til a late hour. "
They will be reinrorced with 100
Salem boys. This will be the most
accomplished 'group of' boys the
chorus has ever taken on a trip.
Besides chorus numbers "which
would be hard to surpass by a
grand opera troupe,, there wUl be
special features, including Bill
Bassett the, boy with; the1, second
highest voice in all the world's
history. He will ' give a demon
stration of his voice in which bei
will cover I four i complete octaves,
singing from B flat below an al
to's low C to E flat above a so
prano's high C, Ralph Richards,
a 10 year old boy pianist, will
appear in solo Work. He plays
some of the heaviest selections
from; the best composers. His
Interpretation and technique ' is
phenomenal, for one of .his age.
There !will ! be Other Interesting
specialties whose ability tp enteri
tairi is extraordinarily great. Thj
entire progrram will be full of
thrilling surprises. :. .'
