The Purebred Cattle Industry
Pure-bred stock raising and
aairying is a gigantic industry
in Polk county. A study of the
crop reports reveals the fact that
for her sze, Polk county ; raises
more feed and forage crops than
any other county round about.

Monmouth, Polk county. Is the
home of Oregon's only State Nor
mal school and is an educational
center of high rank. Th's Insti

went into effect. The bottom
lands of the Willamette river
near and' at Independence are
peculiarly - adapted to this crop
and for years' and years the hop
yards of this section of Polk and
Marion county across the river
led all competing areas in pro

as adaptable - for this crop , and
Polk and Marion hop-f'elds are
still producing 1600 pounds , on
the average as against a general
averace in thu state of 1000
pounds; and despite the fact that
the manufacture of hop products
is on the decl'ne. there was re
cently planted in Polk county al-
kmost 400 acres of new acreage.
The fact remains, in spite of the
lessening market, that as long as
hops are needed for any purpose,
the Pok county hops will be in
demand because of their quality.
There has been a Wonderful
development in highway building
!n Polk county' the past few
years. ' Between Salem and Dal
las, there is a paved road and
the Westside Pacific highway,
one of the primary roads of Ore
gon crosses the county from
north to south. This h:ghway
has net yet been completed al
though a considerable portion of
rit is done; but the permanent
survey has been established, the
preliminary grading done and
the remainder of, the roadT will
he built during this and the com
ing; season perhaps, all of it this
season. From Rickreall to Mon
mouth the pavement has been
completed, the remaining links
being those north from Rickreall
and south from Monmouth to the
county 1-mtts.
, Polk county is an inviting field
for the newcomer no matter
what his financial resources are.
For the man of independent for
tune, there s opportunity for
excellent investments, whether in
agricultural lands or in indus
trials. Such a person can find
ample work for his dollars to do
and ample security for them
while- they are busy. For the
man who desires to follow ag
ricultural pursuits, in a mild
country where failures are un
known, and for the horticulturist.
there is a wonderful field. A
mild and equable climate Is one
oi the big requirements for hort
icultural crops and is a distinct
advantage for the stockman, for
constant feeding of stock and
housing in barns during, the win
ter months is not necessary. It
Is very likely due to this condi
tion, partly, that the raising of
purebred livestock has met with
such signal success here and that
so many of the leading records
of butterfat tests and milk pro
duction are held by Polk and
Marion county breeders.
For the man with little money.
I there isi opportunity. Such a
!one can easily get into fruit and
berry and nut culture on a small
investment and he can find work
during the time his venture is
maturing into the productive
stage. Or, if he chooses, he can
find employment in factories and
mills in the larger communities.
There , are thousands and thous
ands of families . in . the United
States which would be happferj
and far more prosperous and con-j
tented, did they but come to. Polk
county, and become acquainted
with her many opportunities.
Markets, the great requirement
for prosperity on the . farm, are
here In plenty. For the horti
culturist, the man who grows
berries, vegetables, fruits of all
kinds,' there are canneries in the.
large centers which prepare
their produots .for ;world consump
tion. For the dairymen, J there
are first class creameries, all of
which find a wider market for
their butter than they can sup
ply. .
The world is depending upon
canned 'goods for its food. It is
looking to the sections which
can produce the choicest berries,
fruits and vegetables for its sup-
ply of foodstuffs. The perfection!
of the canning method of pre-j
serving such products for ship-j
ment has placed, a tremendous
opportunity within the reach ot;
these favored sections. Here, the'
