In that per ioa the work accomplished . has resulted In 695 miles of .highway graded and pared, ,1197 miles graded and macadamized, and 47S miles graded but .not surfaced. In addition there are 143 miles .pared en the state highway sys tem in Multnprah county, and In incorporated cities of greater than 2000 population, so that the total mileage or the state hfghway sys tem which Is pared, is 838 miles. West Side Highway Completipn of the paving on the West Side Pacific highway placed under contract for com pletion, in 1924.1 Also further work on the McKenzie highway between Bend and Eugene; furth er work on the John.Day highway and also on the Lakevlew-Prine- ville highway; further work on The Dalles-California highway in Wasco, Deschutes, Jefferson and K amath counties; Since December 1, 1922, .24 contracts have1 been awarded at a total estimated cost of $l.o25, 000. 'The addition al tax of 1c per gallon on gasoline will produce- approximately $500,- 000 per year additional revenue, which will bo expended on the state highway system. ; Under the new laws the high way commission is given author ity to route the state highways through cities and towns, which will result ' In direct location on streets best adapted to carrying the through ' travel, without re gard to ' local influences. The highway commission Is also given control 4 of - telephone, telegraph and power lines on state high ways. The present law providing that the commission could close roads or limit the loads, when it seems for the best interests of the state, was amended to provide an adequate penalty for violation.
